John Pickett 35 announces Republican bid to succeed self as district attorney in the May primary. He has served since 1949 as deputy and since 1952 as elected DA, credited with an efficient law enforcement record in Coos County. If renominated he pledges to continue active prosecution and close cooperation with officials. He is married to Fay with two daughters, ages 7 and 5.

The Herald shows Capt Alton J King and his two young sons Monty and Alton waiting atop a large baggage pile at Fort Denver Mass before departing with their parents for Karlsruhe Germany. The family travels under the army rota tion plan Operation Groyoscope with King commanding Company A on a ware engine tour of duty. Capt King is the son of Mrs Minnie King formerly of Powers now of Port Orford.
Governor Elmo Smith announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Oregon governor in the May primary following the death of Governor Patterson. He stated the public supports Patterson’s leadership and program and intends to continue it. Smith also runs the Blue Mountain Eagle weekly in John Day, Oregon.
This Sunday at 11 AM the First Presbyterian Church will dedicate refurnished sanctuary with new oak pews pulpit and communion table. The dedication follows repainting and chancel panel work, with a fellowship dinner in the church dining room afterward.

Medford’s Bucks beat the YMCA 84 to 83 after two overtimes to capture the Southern Oregon AAU district championship. Jack Orr went 9 for 9 at the line, lifting the Bucks with late free throws as Medford squandered opportunities at the stripe. Orr and Joe Martinka fueled the comeback and overtime scoring to seal the win.
West Coast Telephone Co outlines an $8.2 million nationwide 1956 program with $856,730 for the Coos Bay district in Oregon. Powers High School Cruisers coached by Bob Bushnell travel to Coquille Hixa gym Saturday for District B playoff action against Elkton high. A win puts Powers in Baker Oregon for the state playoffs next week. Game starts at 8 p.m. Also note Presbyterian Ladies Aid rescheduled meeting to Wednesday March 7 at the church.
