Antique car fans prepare for a downtown Myrtle Point show recalling 1910 vehicles. The photo features three Maxwells and a Studebaker center car, with tires frequent issues from unpaved roads and no windshields. Owners paid cash about $1000 then while weekend joyrides tested up to 20 mph.
Starting July 1 the city operated ambulance service will use the phone number 572 2124. Police chief Merle Hathaway said the city will probably have its new ambulance in service by that time and if not another ambulance will be used until the new one arrives.
Dick Sondgroth of the Intermediate Education District of Coos County works with 14 to 18 preschool and first grade youngsters at Myrtle Crest School. He test fits speech problems daily through August 8, after moving from Salem to head a federally funded IEC program with annual age-group changes. He recently earned a master in education from Oregon College of Education and plans to live in Myrtle Point with his wife Anne and two daughters Karen and Kristen.
Ed Roberts proudly posed with a Maxwell described as among the earliest cars in Myrtle Point. The windless, topless “airy” vehicle suited Sunday use and Oregon weather, with 1910 counts at four or five local owners. motorists faced flat tires on Bay Area trips, and cars were rare luxuries pulled from garages only on Sundays.
Jens Jorgensen of Georgia Pacific announced halt of land prep at the Myrtle Point site and deferral of construction plans. He cited high interest rates and rising labor costs reducing demand for bulking materials and making the project economically unfeasible at present.
Myrtle Point hosts its sixth annual Antique Car Show on downtown streets this Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. More than 30 restored cars will be displayed across three blocks with trophies for eras and a sweepstakes prize. The Spruce Street Hill climb runs at 2 p.m. and a midday lunch follows at the Colony hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Radio KWRO will broadcast live.
Anne Beyer a 19 year old Holland native arrives in Myrtle Point to join MPHS next fall under Rotary International. She will live with Myrtle Point families starting with Dr Robert Haugs and takes an extra year of U S schooling after European secondary education.
The district reports a levy reduction of 986,835 due to extra state funds for basic school support. Taxpayers see about 85 cents per thousand in assessed value, with teachers gaining 30 days to negotiate salary and policies.
