Opinion by HON R. T. MOORE urges Oregon to treat scenic assets as a major economic asset. As road access and motor travel grow, tourism could become a stable annual industry, requiring early planning and courteous service from those in contact with visitors.
The article urges residents to protect scenic spots by properly disposing of picnic waste and to extend courtesy to travelers. It warns against dust, cutting in, and speeding on winding roads as highways expand. It calls for driver self mastery to ensure safe modernization benefits all.
A report from the L. Lund ranch covers a visit by Mrs. Lund and Ralph Cowen of Portland. Mrs. Tom Thompson recently returned home for a brief stay after teaching near Klamath Falls and plans a three month vacation to England and France.
Military funeral services will be held in Ashland Oregon on Saturday June 25 for Private Charles Elden Pitchford machine gunner in Company 1 143 Infantry Division who was killed in action in Italy. Born July 8 1923 in Vancouver Washington he was a Myrtle Point High School graduate class of 42. He entered service February 1943 trained at Camp Walters Texas served in North Africa and Italy landing at Salerno and San Pietro where he died December 16 1943. He is survived by his mother Mrs Elmer Bell of Myrtle Point stepfather Mr Bell and a brother Clarence Pitchford of Tacoma Washington. He will be buried beside his father in Ashland Cemetery.
