Debbie Walther, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Walther of North Bend, was crowned Fair Queen at Myrtle Point Fairgrounds. She heads a court including Susan Rose and Venita McBride. The event coincided with her parents 25th wedding anniversary and her father’s first bareback relay trophy. Patti McClellan won the sportsmanship award.

Myrtle Point June 17 1968 Chamber of Commerce luncheon heard Bill Knife report on preparations for the Antique Car Show set for June 29. The group urged a North Myrtle Point interchange sign and asked Frank Meldrum to petition the Oregon State Highway Department. Bill Ruhman noted a Corps of Engineers hearing in July and ongoing Port Orford cedar disease studies with good progress. Rev Wilmer Briggs guest speaker from Myrtle Point Methodist Church.

GP Employs Students in Summer Work Program

Pastor Attends Camp Meeting in Myrtle Point
Pastor Robert Sanders spoke at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Myrtle Point on June 15 accompanied by his mother and several young family members. Pastor Siers will move to Istona Oregon to help organize grounds for the Oregon Conference 90th annual encampment June 27 to July 6. The event expects 68 000 daily attendees with 16 000 to 20 000 on weekends at the 72 acre camp site that functions as a temporary city with shops and services.

Hazel Lewis to retire as Powers Librarian
Mrs. Hazel M. Lewis retires as Powers Library librarian at month end after 23 years of service. The library began in 1934 under the Junior Women's Club with plans by Mrs. Albert Powers Jr. and Mrs. James Gamwell. A reception for Mrs. Lewis is set for Thursday June 27 from 1 30 to 5 30 PM hosted by Library board and Royal Neighbors.

Traffic Convictions Rise in May Report
The Department of Motor Vehicles logged 30 110 traffic convictions in May raising year to date total to 148 417. For the same period in 1967 the count was 142 328. Through May 1968 18 637 mandatory suspensions and 1 938 discretionary suspensions were issued, slightly down from 1967.

OSU Buoy Totem 11 Reaches Cobb Seamount in Pacific
Oregon State University oceanographers completed the first phase to anchor Totem 11, a 180 foot research buoy, on Cobb Seamount. Researchers from vessels Yakima and Cayuse towed a steel cylinder and four 15 ton anchors over 300 miles in 4 1/2 days reaching the underwater peak.

Myrtle Grange Honors Fathers in June Program
Myrtle Grange 289 honored Past Masters and fathers Saturday evening June 15 with a program led by Lady Assistant Steward Nellie Hammack. Russell Evans and others attended. activities included a poem, a word game, minutes read from 1898, solos, a skit, group singing, piano medley, cake cutting, and a 30th anniversary bouquet for Master Russell Evans and Lecturer Ruth Evans. The group formed a building committee including Ellis Southmayde, Russell Evans, and Orvus Miller for the new Grange hall.

PP&L Reports Five Year Safety Record in Coos Bay District
Pacific Power and Light employees in the Coos Bay district including Coquille and Myrtle Point have completed five years without a job time lost accident. The 64 workers clocked nearly 690 000 manhours of accident free work and ranked sixth among 39 PP&L districts for safe hours.

Dr Steven Hood Joins Myrtle Point Medical Center
Dr Steven Hood arrived in Myrtle Point on Thursday June 6 to join the Myrtle Point Medical Center staff. Born in Nashville Tennessee in 193? he trained at the University of Tennessee medical school class of 1962 and previously practiced in Seminole Texas. He served in the Naval Air Force 1944 1946 with wife Carol and children Russell Steven Trey Bancaiier 18 months living at 405 Railroad Avenue the former Henry Schroeder residence.

On Tuesday the 11 to 12 year olds were chosen. Boys from both teams will play at Powers at 10:00 a.m. Friday January 82. Last week the year olds defeated Coquille 10 to 7 and the 11 year olds lost 3 to 2. The Babe Rutham in 13 to 15 have split two games, beating Gold Beach 3-3 then losing to Banded 6-4 today.

Twin Oaks 4-H Reunion and Camp Program
The Twin Oaks 4-H Livestock Club invites past members and leaders to a reunion at Davenport's Groves on Catching Creek on June 30 1968 with a 12 00 potluck. The club begun in 1947 by Mr and Mrs George Mall of Broad Bend with former leader Mr Gene Bartlett of Polat. Current leaders are Mr and Mrs Lloyd Rivenport in their twentieth year. membership exceeds ninety with several national honors noted. Also Powers Baptist Church hosts a two week Kids Kampaign directed by Mrs Clyde Ellis from June 17 to June 26 with daily sessions 1 00 to 3 30 and a Friday night finale. Multnomah School of the Bible students will assist. Sammy Greenlowe of Millsboro leads a special athletic program.
