Myrtle Point City Council unanimously denied a proposal by Rabbit Hutch Cafe owner Jerry Fluke to allow card games in taverns. Police Chief Overhul suggested the move would harm the community, citing issues in Coquille and Coos Bay.
John Padgett remains hospitalized at Bay Area Hospital after a Memorial Day shooting that killed Arago neighbor Fred Vetter. Coos County experts say brain injury status is unclear as a Grand Jury prepares to meet on June 28 to decide if a crime occurred.
Red Cross offers weekday swimming lessons from 9 to 12 at Coquille Pool. The June 14–25 session is for Coquille residents only, the July Myrtle Point session for Myrtle Point residents, with other sessions open to all. Registration is today and Friday 9 to noon at the pool bathhouse and Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Myrtle Point City Hall.
Myrtle Point School District 41 approved a revised budget cutting 25 000 and submitted it for the June 29 vote. Fred Blackman was named high school basketball coach joining the staff with prior tenure at Sheridan and Culver high schools.
The 1976 Coos County Fair will not have a new grandstand immediately but attendees can help fund it. The Fair Board hired Master Con for an all steel 298 foot structure rising to 16 seats, cost 810000, boosting seating from 1800 to 3200. Financing relies on 60000 in reserves, plus anticipated 19000 loan and up to 20000 yearly from the fair, with construction to begin after this year’s event.
The 4-H River Riders Horse Club hosts a two day show at Coos County Fair grounds Myrtle Point starting 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday with free spectator admission. Planning notes include future demolition of the east grandstand and relocation of chutes pens and bleachers as part of a long range improve ment plan amid safety concerns.
Myrtle Point religious groups move toward private schooling as the Myrtle Point Christian Assembly Church prepares to start a private school likely inside the church this September. Rev. Robert Leisy of Arago Community Church considers a school next year. The plan uses Accelerated Christian Education, emphasizes individual pacing, and features personal Bible-based instruction.
