Feud over land rights ends in Arago fatal shooting

Fred Vetter, 58, was shot dead at his Arago home amid a long running dispute with John Emmett Padgett, 48. Padgett fled, later found unconscious in his pickup and shot himself. he remained in stable condition with a gun still in hand. An autopsy confirmed Vetter died instantly from chest wounds.

Community resident Fred Vetter dies at 58 in Arago

Fred George Vetter 58 of Arago died May 1 1976 at home. He was born March 28 1918 in Johnson Mill Oregon and a WWII veteran. Survived by wife nea son Douglas Vetter Vancouver daughter Lisa Lath Vancouver sisters Christina Miller Albuquerque and Elsie Byers Coquille one grandson. Services June 4 Myrtle Point Chapter of Cool Mortuaries with private interment. Memorials to charity of choice.

Myrtle Point plans a Babe Ruth baseball squad coached by Jim Ferner of Coquille with a June start if enough players remain available. The season begins today at Gold Beach with nine players named including Snively Capanna and Joe Johnson. additional hopefuls like Jamie Miller may join.

OSU Announces Record 1976 Commencement Graduates

Oregon State University lists candidates for degrees at the 107th commencement Sunday June 6 at Gill Coliseum. About 3 500 to 3 600 degrees will be awarded, a university record, with Lee Shull among the degree recipients Doctor of Philosophy. President Robert MacVicar will address after degrees. County Panels Set June 29 Vote on Bridge Rural Fire District

Coos County Board of Commissioners moved to hold a June 29 election on forming the Bridge Rural Fire District after noting enough opposition. Residents were told they may petition to be excluded if formed, with two petition opportunities: at formation and two years afterward.

Conservation river tour and city council meeting planned in Myrtle Point

A June 10 conservation tour of the Coquille River sponsored by the Cool Soil and Water Conservation District will visit sites including Cement Wash Doug Sinko's dairy Guerin Wash Garrett Ranch and Don Castleman sheep ranch with a 10 am assembly at the Coquille Farm and Garden Store. Myrtle Point plans to expand its Police Reserve Force to eight or 10 members and require 21 year olds with a high school diploma no felonies a valid Oregon license and District 41 residency. Doug Beach of Warner Cable will speak at Monday's City Council meeting on rate increases and new federal rules for cable firms effective March 1977. The agenda also includes a proposed ambulance rate increases and bids for asphalt surfacing in improvement districts 17 and 18.
