College Foundation Elects New Officers and Directors

The Southwestern Oregon College Foundation Inc. elected three new officers at a recent meeting: Mrs Ken Rolfe of Powers as president, Mrs Frances McKenzie of Powers as vice president, and Mrs C J O Neil of Coos Bay as secretary. Three more members join the Foundation committee: Mrs C A Rietman of Coquille, Mrs A H Thelin of Coquille, and James Hanna of Bandon. The Rev A R Chidwick’s resignation was accepted. The foundation, incorporated in 1961, handles gifts, scholarships, loans, and funds, and promotes participation in college work. In 1964 65 SWOC aid totaled about 13254, including district and general scholarships, grant-in-aid, student loans, and NDEA loans. about 88 students participated across three terms.

Southern Pacific Crews Strike Halts Oregon Service

Southern Pacific trains between Powers and Coquille and Coquille and Coos Bay halted Tuesday after crews called in sick Monday night. The stop affected the Oregon division except Klamath Falls with one train operating Coquille to Eugene. Supervisors were flown in to operate trains as the company seeks an injunction and policy on crew size is blamed for the stoppage.

Introduction to Electricity and Electronics Course Added

Southwestern Oregon College adds a new summer course Introduction to Electricity and Electronics designed for high school students and graduates sixteen and older with algebra. Four units credit toward the electrical electronic curriculum, meeting Monday to Friday 10 to 12 in the electronic laboratory room 7 Empire Lakes campus. Carl W Linn Passes Away in Bandon

Carl W Linn 4 of Bandon died Friday June 4. Born 1880 at Lintington he moved to Bandon in 1906. He retired as head sawyer from Moore Mill and Lumber Co in Bendon. Survived by widow three grandchildren and one great grandson. Funeral held 2 p.m. Monday June 7 at Schroeder Bros chapel Bandon.

City appoints Wayne Sheffel patrolman to fill vacancy

Chief Lewis Floyd announced the employment of Wayne Edward Sheffel as a city patrolman to fill the vacancy left by the resigning Lioy Hawkins who plans to leave June 18 Hawkins will work with the department early this week.

At a regular church meeting Rev. George W tendered his resignation effective Sept 1 after 18 months with the Myrtle Point congregation. He and Mrs Williams plan to move soon and continue in Brethren ministry, weighing several pastorates.

Arne Elbek Service Today

Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday in Norway cemetery for Arne Elbek. Officiant Charlies T. Oden of Myrtle Point Jehovah's Witnesses. Elbek, born December 31, 1914 in Engunai Denmark, died June 7 in Myrtle Point at 50. He was a dairyman in Arago for five years, previously from Junction City. He leaves a brother Vagn Elbek of Santa Barbara and sisters Asse and Gudrum in Denmark among others.

Spring Handicap Golf Crown Won by Mrs Sturza at Elks

Mrs Jack Sturza captured the Spring Handicap championship at the Elks golf course in May with a final round win over Mrs Frank Meldrum. Sturza eagled the eighth hole to seal victory. Last year’s winner was Mrs Floyd Bridgham. In first flight, Lou Robinson won with Tory Milosevich as runner-up. Second flight saw Leroy Robinson defeat Harold Stemmier.

Farmers Warned Of Power Lines During Irrigation Season

PP&L manager Bill Head warns farmers hiring seasonal workers to be careful with metal irrigation pipes and gear near power lines. Moving heavy mobile units or lifting pipes can touch wires, causing severe burns or worse. Grounding motor frames and control panels is recommended, with copper ground rods and proper bypassing of insulation when grounding well casings.
