Architectural drawing shows the first unit of a new church building by local Episcopal members. The Parish hall measuring 22 by 60 feet will be constructed first and serve for church and recreational use until the main church is completed, Austin Dodge states.
The piece denounces illegal deer hunting where hunters tag deer with another’s name, enabling multiple bucks per season. It cites many law abiders complicit, describes tagging by wives or relatives, and notes incidents across Oregon counties, including Klamath, with cases of four bucks by one hunter.

A Wednesday night blaze at 8th and Maple destroyed the Cotton Tire Shop owned by O. E. Standley. Explosions from gas containers hampered efforts. the roof collapsed and walls were torn down next morning. Loss about $50,000 with partial insurance. nearby Presbyterian church suffered blistered paint. Fire departments from Myrtle Point and Coquille responded but could not save the building or its contents.
The Inter church Daily Vacation Bible School closes with a final program Friday June 11 at 8 p m in the Methodist church. Parents may view handwork in the church basement from 7 to 8 p m. The school enrolled about 200. thanks are given to all staff and helpers. The Junior High department led by Mrs Kenneth Galloway reports its best enrollment yet with aides listed.
The National Youth Conference of the Church of the Brethren will be held in August in Anderson Indiana. Youths from California Washington and Oregon will travel by chartered Greyhound buses. Myrtle Point Brethren youths expect to attend the first national youth meet to gain travel fellowship and inspiration. A hot chicken tamale sale is planned for Saturday June 19 to raise funds. Orders may be phoned to 5331 or 1301.
Bridge 4 H I clubs present an entertainment program on Saturday June 12 at 8 pm in the school auditorium to raise funds for the Bridge 4 H Achievement Day. The show features drama music and tap dancing.
The Presbyterian boys and girls camp runs June 20 to 26 open to children ten and older from all denominations. Registration at Schroeder's store in Myrtle Point costs 12 dollars for board and housing, with early signup encouraged even if funds are not yet available. Activities include games contests hiking swimming camp fire Bible stories and missionary talks. Wedding and baggage should be brought to the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon June 20 and a truck will transport items to the camp at McKinley.
Benny King nine son of Mr and Mrs George King of Catching Creek was diagnosed with polio at Mast hospital and taken to Sacred Heart hospital in Eugene Saturday. Doctors say the case is not serious and he should recover from a partially paralyzed left side. Benny and his parents were transported to Eugene by Tex Billingsley and Mrs King remained at the hospital with him.
Local volunteers honored for air defense work with Wings badges after 32 hours of service. Wayne Bryant topped the hours at 60. The ceremony featured many residents and Army Air Corps personnel in uniform.
One hundred fifty eight students have signed for Red Cross swimming classes sponsored by the Myrtle Point Lions' Club. The group includes 147 beginners, seven intermediates, and four swimmers. Life saving classes for juniors and seniors will be held after July 4. If any registrants were missed contact Paul Franzen at 1731 days. Classes run June 21 to July 2 with after July 4 life saving sessions.
Myrtle Point volunteer fire fighters slowed by phone call traffic after a blaze at Bob Cotton Tire Service. Fire Chief John Fellner asks residents to stay off phones for a few minutes after the alarm to allow crews to access lines and respond efficiently.
Miss Ruth Stoufer the frozen food author will appear at Henry A. Schroeder and Sons store next Saturday June 12 at 2 30 p m for the Ann Mac Gregor Frozen Food Party. She will share fresh ideas on wrapping packaging preparing and cooking frozen foods with the public invited to attend.
Two Myrtle Point Elementary District Board seats are up for election on June 21 at the Myrtle Crest school at 2pm. Incumbent Othal Davenport seeks re election for a five year term and the remaining four year term vacancy from Dean Bramon who resigned and moved away. Other board members include W R Davenport chairman elect, Ovid Hervey and Paul Hammer.
Officers of the newly organized Teen-Age club sponsored by the Active club met at the Heber Dayton home to plan June activities. President Jo Martinka called the meeting with Bruce Whitaker as vice president. June 11 features a dancing party at the Boy Scout building at 7 30 p m with refreshments. June 18 offers a skating party at Tanglewood and June 26 a regular business meeting at Scout 5.
Myrtle Point city dads debated weed and grass fires hazards in city limits. A five day notice is required before fines or imprisonment. the city may cut growth and bill the owner with 10 percent added. The council urged rapid cleanup and reviewed library plans and the budget with a Monday meeting to set next steps.
Myrtle Point Chamber heard Postmaster Milton Schroeder explain that every mail piece must include full address details and box numbers for all recipients. A proposed county directory or Herald publication was discussed to share names and addresses, with Schroeder and Floyd Hall to report next meeting. The group voted to contribute up to $30 to support the Community band’s trip to Coos Bay for Timberoo.
Bill Downing and Cecil Carter won their semi finals in the Annual Spring Handicap at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club. Downing trails Carter by ten strokes at the first tee as they contest the 18 hole final with Downing holding a 17 handicap and Carter 27. Other finals set include Hewlett vs Vannice in the 2nd flight and Patrick vs Hewett in the 3rd and Sabnick vs Dunn in the 4th.
Fair board president Sam Dement urged Coos County Chamber of Commerce support to boost the 1954 fair parade as the county’s major advertising project. The Myrtle Point Saddle Club has long supervised the event and may co supervise this year with fair board representatives soliciting cooperation from all organizations and counties to stage the biggest parade yet. Last year’s parade drew wide attention across the region.
