In a city summer recreation program announced by rector Chuck Humble, signups for boys summer baseball categories are set for Wednesday at Fresh Grounds. Ages 9-10 and 11-12 have specific start times, with older teens-aimed Babe Ruth players to practice later. Myrtle Crest gym evenings will host open sessions beginning June 13.
The Myrtle Hotel expansion nears finish with a 2000 foot banquet room that can split into two spaces and services from the kitchen. Opening slated June 11 with a banquet for Mac Johnson, plus eight new rooms above. Rotary and Lions clubs plan to meet there this week. Oregon art exhibit and open house run June 2–3. Port of Coquille River budget approved under 5 000. A Cub Scout picnic set for June 5 at Odd Fellow Park. Roger Weed earns prestigious national NSF undergraduate award for 1966–67.
Myrtle Point High School honored students with departmental and athletic awards during the May 20 assembly in the cafeteria. Recipients spanned chemistry English French home economics journalism U S history science social science drama scholarship citizenship and activities. Track and field, tennis, and baseball letters were awarded to numerous students with notable recognition to Karen Dawson, Connie Kelly, Mary Powrie, and others.
Commencement exercises in the Myrtle Point high school gym honored 111 seniors. Awards were presented by Jim King. notable scholarships include Charlotte Northup to Bible Institute of Los Angeles and Janet Miller to Eugene Beauty College. Multiple state and local scholarships were announced, with readings and musical numbers by Alexa Chittick and others.
A 118 ton Georgia Pacific locomotive derailed near Spruce street bridge early Tuesday spilling cargo from 11 cars of an 81 car train. Police investigate tampering suspected at a half open switch and train crews re-railed and realigned the line. Jim King will move from high school vice principal and guidance counselor to lead the district’s elementary and secondary programs. He replaces David Dillon, named principal of an elementary school in Alaska. King will oversee the district’s course of study and supervision alongside Superintendent Joe Stewart and others. He has eight years in elementary education and four in secondary, with prior roles including Bridge school superintendent-principal and high school librarian. He served in WWII as an electronics and radar instructor and has worked as a logger welder and carpenter, grounding him in vocational training.
Dinah Marie Dooley graduated Wednesday May 11 from United Airlines Stewardess training in Chicago. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim King of Sitku Rt and a Mor. e to Point High School alumna class of 1964. Dooley is stationed in Chicago living with fellow stewardesses and on call for weeks, able to fly anywhere until assigned a regular route. Mrs King and her niece Mrs Eva Jefferson of Portland attended the graduation ceremony.
West Coast Telephone Division Manager Raymond Sheehan announced a trial rate cut beginning June. The new rate caps intra state calls at 10 minutes between 10 p m and 4 30 a m at not more than 1.00 dollars.
