Portland reading clerk Roderic Keating spoke at the chamber of commerce dinner in Hamm's Cafe on sales tax. Henry Kern of North Bend, president of the county chamber, followed with a short talk on the same subject.
Oregon State College forestry freshmen will enter the Civilian Conservation Corps for six months starting after June term end. About 30 students will join a camp near Reedsport with instructor Fred Schreiner directing logging engineering tasks and surveying courses to earn college credit.
The Arago high school board met Monday night and hired Alvin Allen as principal for the coming year to succeed G W Ayera, who moves to Sans Valley school in Rogue River valley near Gold Hill. Professor Allen was principal of Bridge high school the past year.
Burr Monrad tore a knee ligament while running down a hill at Cape Blaheo Decoration Day injury during last season’s football. Dr Mast plans to keep the leg in a cast for the summer, ruling out use for about three months.
About 100 took the exam with roughly half failing due to lack of laws knowledge, driving test difficulties, and vision. Mire Lots Parry and Byren Hervey of Lee were married Saturday at the bride’s sister Mrs George Reed’s Roseburg home. Attended by Tiffany Parry, the ceremony was followed by a wedding supper for close friends. The large crowd gathered Monday at the groom’s parents’ home. The bride is daughter of John Parry and the groom is son of Henry Hervey, all of Lee.
The 17 year old son of Dr Rodgers was attacked by a bull on his father’s farm Saturday. He was knocked through a fence and sustained a badly bruised left shoulder. He was taken to Mast Hospital where the shoulder was set and he wore a sling.

Members of the Woman's club and their husbands met at Hamm's Cafe for the final season meeting with about 30 people. After a banquet the group moved to the city hall for officer elections and an evening of music and games. Officers elected were Mrs L. A. La Flamme president, Mrs P W Laird first vice president, Mrs O H Carkes and vice president, Mrs A. M. Sunstrup treasurer, and Mrs Frank Hazelwood secretary.
Shiney Levy of Alfate New York wins the seventh annual high school competitive exam by the League of Nations Association. He earns a free trip to Geneva this summer as the guest of the League of Nations association.
The boundary board divides non-high school districts into five zones for a five-member board of education. Candidates must file petitions by June 4 with 30 voter signatures, and June 19 voters will choose the board at large. Carolyn Schneider of Mlahe is named senior scholar in mathematics at Willamette University in Salem for the coming year. The appointment, made by Professor Mathews, hinges on grades and dean approval.
Dr William A Scoenfeld dean of agriculture at Oregon State College was named by Secretary of State Cordell Hull as one of 25 official members of the Fifth Pacific Science Congress to be held in Victoria and Vancouver British Columbia June 1 to 14. Close to 200 officials from 31 Pacific-bordering countries will attend along with hundreds of scientists. Also recommended was Dr B T Simms head of veterinary at Oregon State College, but his confirmation was not received with Schoenfeld's. The last congress was held in Java with Dr E M Harvey from Oregon State College representing the United States.
A badly sprained ankle sidelined A C Chase after he alighted from his car in the garage of his home following a shift at Smith Wood Products Saturday.
The County Health association begins a membership drive with Miss Elma Russell in charge. Dues are ten cents payable to Miss Hussell or Miss Marguerite Laird. The Myrtle Point chapter plans a pre school clinic Friday June 30 from 10 am to 2 pm at city hall. Further details will appear later in the Herald.
The Hiland theater in Myrtle Point will run two programs per week. Friday and Saturday shows remain, with a different program on Sunday and Monday. The venue promotes its coastwide reputation for sound quality and extends hours by offering fresh weekly content.
