Camp at Cleavox invites women for a week of hiking, crafts, and bird study led by Mrs Olive Barber. Activities include candlewicking, archery, tetherball, and library access with a focus on nature observation. Registration through Mrs Julian Bennett lists attendees from North Bend Marshfield and nearby towns.
Cartoonist H. and originator Ryan of new cartoons tours the country and visits Myrtle Point to discuss appearances at the Highland Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday August 9. He plans to share travel stories and ideas with Oregon audiences and thanks Myrtle Point for the warm reception as he prepares to return to New York.
Former residents of Iowa and their families are invited to the Iowa Day picnic at North Ingeoe Park this Sunday. Families should bring a basket lunch and ashes, while coffee cream and sugar will be provided. This is the eighth annual event anticipated to draw a large crowd.
Myrtle Point group stages The Wedding of the Painted Dell a pageant directed by Mrs Fred Lafferty featuring 40 children including 14 from Myrtle Point. Cast lists children from local families and the show is scheduled Thursday afternoon as part of West Days in Coudaw.

Early this morning Orin Bud Solomon was crushed on the loading platform at the McNaur Sykes camp at the Sixes River head near Eckley. Married about a year, he leaves a wife and baby. A logger with McNab Sels last season, his father, a rancher near Elkton, is expected to arrive to arrange the body at Schroeder Funeral Home. Funeral planned for Elkton on Saturday.
A special meeting of the board of directors of No. 41 Myrtle Point was held Monday to fill the vacancy created by Austin Dodge. Howard Whitaker was elected. his term ends in June 1898, with other directors G L McKay Flentye Perne and Mrs Metta Roselow.
Coquille hosts Golden Wear Dayz from August 10 to 13 with a three day rodeo featuring famed performers led by Miss Ollie Osborne and Miss Donna Cowan. Rodeo bronc champions Dell Smith Joe Coongn and Jerry Amber will appear with riders from Salinas and Fortuna. Local contests include a 20 dollar prize for taming Brahma bulls and a ladies back drawing contest. Children from the county perform on Thursday and a Mother County crown is awarded.
The Cornhuskers meet for the thirteenth annual Nebraska picnic at Corvallis City Park on Sunday August 7 in the south city park area along the highway. Last year about 1590 people attended with ample room this year. Coffee will be furnished free and attendees should bring their own cup. The afternoon program will be brief to allow time for renewing acquaintances.
Dr Franklin Birch of Marshfield announces his son Dr Frederick Birch has joined the practice after graduating from North Pacific salon Drometry. Frederick attended Marshfield High School and helped in his spare time.
John Kusba Jr., son of Mr and Mrs John Kusba of Myrtle Point, disappeared after leaving a note for his parents. Police were alerted as no destination was named. A Los Angeles aunt wired that the boy is safe with relatives and will stay there for several weeks.
A sequence of land conveyances appears across Coos and nearby counties listing buyers and sellers such as Chas C McCracken and Maude R McCracken to Ward for 160 acres and 10 acres in sections near Halls and Catching creeks, and Edith May McKee and J F McKee selling over 200 acres near Marshfield. Other deeds name Caroline Train to Cooper, Rowena and A E Snyder to Rockard, and Belmont Jones to Ben Rogers among multiple transfers involving Myrtle Point, Coquille, Powers, Sitkum, and surrounding areas.
The Coquille community hosts the Coos County Pioneers Picnic on July 31 at Mystic Grove beside the Community building. A large crowd is expected to attend with the Coquille band performing before lunch. After dinner the group gathers in the hall for an address by the mayor and a business meeting to elect officers for the coming year.
The Methodist Ladies Aid will hold a cooked food sale at the City Meat Market on Saturday July 30 in the city. Proceeds support church work and community welfare.
R M Harrison recounts a trek where food shortages forced youths to hunt for wild meat. Buffalo are gone, leaving prairie dogs and picket pins for sustenance as the train climbs the Rockies toward a promised golden grain and harsh frontier life.
Bridge Scouts and their friends hosted a birthday party for Byron Van Alstein in his family home basement with games and sandwiches after registering 30 attendees. Scout master Max Garrett organized a Seaside camping trip for ten scouts to visit the lighthouse over the weekend.
A Myrtle Point Coquille highway incident left Violet Thettle dead Monday from injuries after a cut tree limb struck her as she watched her father. She died in Coquille hospital where leg amputation and gangrene followed. Funeral services were in Dora church with Rev George Turney officiating. she is survived by her parents brother Keith Lois and grandparents.
A Clifford Kern of Coquille is named administrator of Edwin Henry Kern’s estate who died July 16 at the county seat. Ned C Kelley and H A Young (appraisers) value realty at 1500 and personal property at 200. Heirs include A Clifford Kern Melvin J Kern and Laura Danielson sole heir and executor to Harry V Tremble’s estate valued at 1950.
The Gravelford Woman's club met Thursday at Mrs J L Crosby's home for the July session. Mrs W J DeBoer spoke on the homemakers camp and urged members to attend. Present were Mesdames James Baker, W J DeBoer, E L Culbertson, Joe Walker, J L Crosby, with guests Mesdames James Colpitts, E Bond, Levert Iverson, and Norland Gant. The August meeting will be at Mrs T J Weekly's home.
Mr and Mrs H Ernest Watkins of Halls Creek left for Portland to attend the funeral of Mrs Earl Watkins who died Saturday after a relapse following an operation. Mrs Watkins, originally from Bandon, was well known in BE vicinity.
The Myrtle Point Towneeld Club cancels its meeting scheduled for this Sunday due to the Coos Aug 7 event.
A. H. Bender finds a cow wandering among oaks and brush on a woods hike while picking wild blackberries in a quart cup. A two year old heifer sticks her head from the berry pail, lapping up the snack, prompting Bender to plan berrying without cows in 1838.
Jack Mathews jailed for taking Piper 27 on forgery by endorsement. Piper pled guilty to signing Lulu Ott’s name to a $650 check sent by a Eugene man to settle a board bill. Sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary.
