Coos County summer program aids trainable youths
The Coos County Association for Retarded Citizens and the Coos County Intermediate Education District sponsor a summer program for trainable mentally retarded children at Jefferson School in Coquille. Students travel from Coquille, Coos Bay, and Myrtle Point. Myrtle Point riders are ferried by the Coquille Emblem Club No. 226. Club volunteers drive students each morning and back home each afternoon. The club also funds classroom equipment and milk program support.

Traffic deaths rise in eastern and southwestern Oregon counties
Motor Vehicles Division reports fifteen counties had higher traffic deaths in the first half of 1974 than a year earlier while most others showed no change or declines. Counties with increases include Coos Curry Douglas Jackson Wheeler Harney Malheur Umatilla and others. Malheur climbs from three to ten and Umatilla from seven to fourteen.

A rider chronicles a 15 1/2 day solo bicycle journey from Myrtle Point Oregon to Denver Colorado. He logs 1473.8 miles at an average 95 miles daily with six camp nights and six motel stays. He crosses six mountain passes including the Continental Divide and notes gear weight of 66 pounds and a single flat tire.
