City hears complaints on speeding and noise. pool proposal reviewed

City council received complaints about excessive speeds and noise from drivers. Harlan Kester and Erickson presented pool cost estimates from 137000 to 840000 with maintenance about 91 per square foot annually and urged a comprehensive study tying in with schools. Parks committee was appointed to study location and program details. New prizes announced for Coos County Fair with 25 prize money and a 60 sweepstakes award. photography changes pause black and white entries.

Art Show Awards and Divisions Spark Local Competition

In competition with color photos there will be 85 prizes for best show amateur and professional divisions with ribbons for first second and third in each. Other divisions include painting ceramics crafts antiques and collections across age groups and skill levels.

Father Jom Ly Installed at Holy Name Coquille

The installation of Father Jom Ly as pastor of Holy Name Church Coquille and Myrtle Point St Ann’s and Michael’s will take place Monday evening July 22 with Rev Kies as installing priest. Clergy from other dioceses will attend and parishioners from Myrtle Point Powers and the public are invited. Coffee and cookies will follow.

New Directory Explained At Chamber Meeting

At a noon July 15 Chamber of Commerce meeting R A Bod McKenzie discussed the new phone book distribution in Southwestern Oregon. the listing would drop city designations except for Coos Bay and North Bend with attrition. The chamber endorsed a letter urging city designations to remain behind each listing. The session also discussed the Coquille River Region Planning Commission and historical notes on the Hermann home in Myrtle Point, its restoration plans, and the Baltimore Colony legacy.

Coquille River Regional Planning Authority Proposed

A plan proposes Ban don, Coquille, Myrtle Point, Powers, and several districts join to form the Coquille River Regional Planning Authority. It would handle long and short term regional planning, reports, population and land use, highways, water, sewer, health, and sanitation, while coordinating with existing planning commissions and seeking federal funds. The authority would have two members from each participating entity, selected by each presiding officer.

Summer Reading Program at Spruce School Uses Deep Sea and Space Themes

The Federal funded program runs six weeks of summer training for lower grades at Spruce School. Assistant Superintendent Jim King notes gains for some students while testing will show others regress. Teachers use Tachistoscope devices, reading accelerators, films, tape recorders and listening stations. High school readings link outside paperbacks to textbook themes. Aides assist in materials, devices, oral reading, and testing. Parents and citizens are invited to visit July 23 and 24 to observe.

Wallet Recovered From Ocean After Salmon Trip

On Sunday morning July 14 Gerald Ansen and son Gary with Mr Ray Wileer of Myrtle Point reported finding a wallet floating about six miles offshore. They retrieved it with a net and found a large sum of money along with many cards.

Open Invitation for Homecoming Sunday Service

The church invites all to a Sunday morning service on July 86 1960 featuring Reverend Lloyd Swenson former pastor now serving youth. It marks a home coming for Rev Swenson who led the church 1967 1908. A coffee hour will follow to meet Rev Swenson and his family.
