Class of 1918 Reunion Honors Faculty and Guests

The 1918 alumni reunion hosts Dr. and Mrs. Victor P. Morris of Eugene and Dr. and Mrs. John Gary of La Center Washington as guests of honor at a Saturday open house 2 to 5 30 p m at 585 Fifth Street Wallace Dement's home. The dinner at 7:00 p m at the Masonic Lodge salutes their teaching and administration careers. Dr. Morris works on the Seventh Oregon Clergy Conference on Economic Education August 25 29 1968. Dr. Gary serves as secretary treasurer of the Aaron M. Frank Scholarship Foundation Inc. and was Myrtle Point high school principal in 1918. The no host dinner invites all earlier classes and out of town members. phone numbers are listed for contact. The celebration closes with a Sunday noon Alumni Association picnic at Rotary Park with coffee and Kool-Aid provided and each family bringing one table setting.

Elks Leader Phil Alborn Heads to National Convention

Exalted Ruler Phil Alborn will represent Coquille Valley Elks Lodge 1935 as official delegate with his wife Carol. They travel from Coquille Valley to Portland then fly nonstop to New York City on July 12 with United Airlines and return July 19.

4 H Dairy Program Boosts Farm Income Across States

The national 4 H Dairy program supervised by the Cooperative Extension Service aids dairy farm families with 4 H members under 19 by delivering modern production techniques animal health and breeding knowledge and judging guidance. State and national competition require three or more years in 4 H and age 14 or older.

Former mayor dies in accident at 76 in Oregon

Elvin Bill Eads died July 6 1968 in Medford Oregon aged 76 born October 27 1891 in McMinnville Oregon. He lived in Myrtle Point since 1923 operated Eads Garage over 36 years. He served as councilman 1944 1954 and mayor 1956 56. Survived by Nellie wife Jack L Eads son Dorothy Stephanson daughter four grandchildren. Service held July 9 1968 Myrtle Point Chapel and private interment July 10 1968 Roseburg Memorial Garden.

Red Cross Swim Classes Registration in Myrtle Point

Registration for Red Cross swimming classes in Myrtle Point is Friday July 12 at City Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. The July 15 to 26 session offers beginner and intermediate groups with age based times and an adult class. A school bus will transport participants from Maple Primary School.

Shad and Striped Bass Tagged In Coos Bay Study

Biologists from the Oregon Fish Commission tag shad and striped bass in Coos Bay to study life histories. Several hundred fish have yellow spaghetti tags so far this season. Biologist Ed Cummings urges fishermen to return any tags with date and catch area to the Charleston Research Laboratory.

Fish Commission study funded under Anadromous Fisheries Act terms

The Fish Commission study is financed partly with federal funds under Public Law 80 304. The tagging program gathers data on shad and striped bass in Coos Bay. Information on commercial catch fishing intensity age composition sex ratios spawning history and juvenile ecology continues for the Sluslaw Umpqua Smith Coquille rivers and the Coos system.

Wig Wam Bakery Opens in Old Sears Building

The Wig Wam Bakery opens Monday in the old Sears building operated by Mr. and Mrs. John Wright. They offer fresh baked goods plus coffee under the name Coffee and Donvuts. The Wrights, formerly of Roseburg, ran a Livingston Montana bakery and live at 643 7th B Myrtle Point with four daughters Cynthia 13 Carolyn 12 Cheri 9 Candies 7.

Timber Sales by Powers District Total 25.8 Million Bf in June 1968

Six timber sales totaling 25,800,000 board feet were sold in June 1968 by the Powers District of the Siskiyou National Forest to support local industry. Total appraised value was 9991,125.50 and total sale value 1,069,000.76. The largest sale moved 15,600,000 board feet for 1,137,276.00. the smallest 160,000 for 10,697.78. Douglas fir dominated. the highest bid for old growth was 108.00 per thousand board feet and the lowest for second growth was 85.00 per M. All but the smallest sale were sold under Domestic Manufacturing requirements.

Campaign to clean public lands launched at Outdoor Writers meet

Boyd L. Rasmussen of the Interior Department announced a top to bottom cleanup campaign at the 41st Outdoor Writers Association of America convention in Pine Mountain Georgia. He unveiled a new symbol Johnny Horizon to personify the effort and urged Americans to protect and enjoy public lands while recreation use grows.

Former Resident Bottorff Died In Oregon Lake Drowning

Robert Lewis Bottorff 33 of Bax¬4 South Coos River Coos Bay drowned July 4 around 1 10 p m in Cleavox Lake south of Flo Lane County Oregon. He and half brother Dan Russell 18 were attempting to swim across from the north side bath house when Bottorff began to sink. Russell could not keep him afloat. Don Wesley Long Florence swam to the scene and assisted with recovery. Bottorff pronounced dead at Western Lane Hospital Florence. Funeral services held July 7 and private interment July 10 in Norway Cemetery. Bottorff born April 28 1945 Los Angeles Calif. He worked for Weyerhaeuser as a hoist driver and was a member of WA 3261 North Bend. World Champion Log Truck Driver Named at Albany Carnival

Bob Gilliland, representing Clackamas County and the Oregon Log Truckers Association, won the first annual World Champion Log Truck Driver contest held during the Albany Timber Carnival over the Fourth of July weekend. He outperformed five other top finalists from twelve counties and earned the title amid sponsorship by the Oregon Log Truckers Association and Ale. Ramnow of Lincoln City took second, followed by Burt Ward of Albany, Ron Reed of Myrtle Point, and Keith Gelder of Springfield.

Landmark Myrtle Point hall recalls early church and Legion history

The former sanctuary at Magpie and Seventh streets, built by the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, became home to American Legion Post No. 38 after World War I.
