Elks Clubhouse at Coquille Valley Destroyed by Fire
The Elks Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club building on the local course was destroyed Thursday morning by a attic fire likely started by an electrical short. Loss estimated between 40 and 55 thousand dollars, with insurance about 36 thousand. The couple Carl Elvers and spouse, custodians of the dining room, dance hall and restaurant, lost nearly all possessions. Ray White side, owner and pro shop manager, helped save stock and gear. Fire crews from Brodie Shingle Co. mill, Coquille Rural Fire District, Coquille Volunteer Fire Department, Coos Forest Patrol, and a Bridge tanker fought the blaze but could not save the structure, which included a remodel underway for club rooms and a new pro shop.
