Eight rehearsals are scheduled for Myrtle Point's community band directed by Les Simons with Mrs. J H Gardner guiding questions. Open to eighth graders and older including high school college and community members. Rehearsals run Tuesdays 7 to 8 pm in the high school music room July 17 through August 28.
G E Albertson of Myrtle Point was installed as vice-chairman of the board of directors of Southwestern Oregon Area Education District at a Monday meeting. Wilfred A Jordan of North Bend was named new board chairman, succeeding Henry Hansen. Richard Hanen of Coos Bay was appointed secretary. Dr Samuel A Yorke of Portland State College was appointed professor of English and dean of liberal arts at Southwestern Oregon College.
Unpaved Myrtle Point streets will get a summer coating of a chemical waste from a pulp plant near Empire. Officials say the fluid is economical for dust control, costing $85 per load with six loads covering the streets. Each load is 4000 gallons and the main expense is transport and application. The water soluble fluid washes away with rain but dust is reduced on gravel roads.
The Leatherwood apartment building is slated for demolition to make way for a new hospital parking area. Paul Hammer stated the hospital administration requests the city vacate a side alley to expand hospital property for better use. City officials are considering the request.
Dr Jack Grant joins the Myrtle Veterinary hospital staff alongside Dr R P Whittaker and Dr RC Haguer. His family arrived to live on Myrtle Crest Lane after his June graduation from Washington State College, with the clinic offering 24 hour on call service via code-a-phones.
Coos Curry Electric Cooperative receives a $190000 REA loan under section five to expand consumer financing for home wiring irrigation water systems and major electrical appliances. Loans up to $2500 may now be offered with cooperative responsibility for repayment to REA.
Genevieve Montgomery, mother of three, receives a $1,000 scholarship from the Jackson Foundation for a year at Oregon Technical Institute. She graduates Myrtle Point High, 1953, and is on the dean’s honor list. aims to become a registered medical technologist.
State police report a series of rear end collisions on Highway 42 west of Myrtle Point between Coquille and Benhams Ready Mix plant around 4 30 pm Tuesday. Thelma Long of Vista California drove a car pulling a house trailer. Alan Shaw of Coquille rode in a county truck and trailer struck by Oscar Helstand of Coquille in another vehicle push. A state pickup hit another rear end as police described.
Two fires sparked by children playing with matches were controlled by the Forest Protective Association. One fire burned one to one and a half acres of a cold logging slash at Remote on Friday July 6, stopped by a Bridge crew. A half acre blaze at Four Bit Gulch was likely started Monday by children burning out a bees nest, according to Warden Huff. He urged parents to restrict child use of matches during the dangerous fire season.
Mrs Jake Otter, welcoming hostess for the chamber, visited six new Myrtle Point families. The Adams and Hay couples from Virginia join Horton of McMinnville Peak of Bandon Riley of Coquille and Uht of California. Five more families live in the trailer court as men work on the new highway.
Powers to host motorcycle races at 1 pm Sunday July 15 under Ridge Runners Motorcycle Club auspices. Lions Club concession stands to operate. $100 in cash prizes offered to winners. Tickets 50 cents for adults and high school students, 25 cents for grade school pupils.
Phyllis Reser of Powers made the honor roll at Southern Oregon College in Ashland. She achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or above while carrying 12 or more credit hours for the spring quarter.
The Barklow family invites friends and relatives to a picnic on Sunday July 15 at 1 pm in the Oak Grove, Myrtle Point county fairgrounds. John T Raver chairs the event and urges everyone to attend and bring relatives and friends.
The West Coast Telephone Myrtle Point exchange nears dial operation with 1475 phones, crews replacing shells cords and handsets as needed. Splicing for the backbone link and testing will finish by August 15, then subscribers are contacted to verify equipment works, with the $194,000 project proceeding smoothly.
Myrtle Point expands its summer recreation program through cooperation of the school district city Georgia Pacific cham ber of commerce Oddfellows and Lions club. About 60 youngsters sign up for baseball directed by Chuck Humble with three age groups. Monday night basketball at Myrtle Crest gym from 7 to 9. Red Cross swimming lessons July 23 to August 4 at Coquille pool with free bus transport three trips daily and a $2 fee in Coquille. One hundred youngsters expected for swimming. tennis lessons offered at city court across from Superior cheese plant for homebound participants.
Superintendent Joe Stewart of district 4 travels to Eugene, Oregon for a financing education workshop at the University of Oregon, through July 18. He plans to use the lessons to aid Myrtle Point district finances and notes district 41 faces maintenance and staffing needs including five new teachers and expanded music instruction.
Myrtle Point High School alumni announce a Sunday potluck picnic at Rotary Park by the Scout building at 12:30 p.m. 1932 and 1942 reunion dinners are planned for Saturday night. 1961-62 officers include Mrs Mildred Miller as president and Vern Breuer as secretary.
The county chamber of commerce will hold a no host dinner meeting at 7 30 p m Tuesday July 17 at the Myrtle Hotel. Lakeside visitors are expected to attend in Myrtle Point.
Mark Putnam son of Mr and Mrs Glen Putnam sustained a pulled tendon in his right leg during a water skiing mishap on July 5. He was skiing on a lake above Ashland when converting from two skis to one. He was taken to Rogue Valley Memorial hospital. His sister Mrs Jack Pinkley reported the details.
