Two Vehicles Collide at Maple Street Intersection

Myrtle Point police report a two car collision at Fourth Street and Maple Street. Drivers Ort Kath Bates 19 of 457 Manchester Court Roseburg and James William Hurst 63 of 21 Reedsford Road Myrtle Point were involved. passenger Hazel Hurst 49 was in the Hurst vehicle. No citations issued.

Summers ends assignment Navy Airman Edward Summers

Navy Airman Edward Summers son of Mr and Mrs Edward Summers of Pleasant Valley Myrtle Point completed an eight month deployment aboard the nuclear powered attack aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. They trained in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and assisted in evacuations disasters including Mauritius cyclone relief. Summers visited Mombasa Singapore and Manila after joining the Navy in June 1973.

Myrtle Point Rotary Plans Mexican Exchange Student

The Myrtle Point Rotary will sponsor Guadalupe Espuanza Pedrero Stall an 18 year old from Tapachula Chiapas Mexico for the coming school year. She will arrive in late August to live three to four months with the George Miller family on North Fork Road. Mrs Linda Miller notes Miss Motali speaks little English and lists sociology as an interest.

Riddleman Named New Myrtle Point High Principal

August 2 report states Riddleman, 40, former principal at Hiddle for eight years, is elected to become Myrtle Point High principal. He will be confirmed after the school board meets Monday evening. Roe, Montana graduate, has served as junior high principal at Riddle and senior high vice principal. Roe has eight years at Moline in Klamath County and holds a Master in Education from Southern Oregon College. He previously worked at Portland State and University of Oregon and is married with four children. Roe begins Monday, July 14.

An increased number of contestants prompts an elimination contest for the finals to be staged Sunday August 17 at Covus County fair. Events include log chopping ax throwing log rolling truck driving and a new hot saw competition with specified final counts for each event.

Western Quarter Horse Show At Coos County Fairgrounds

Over 200 riders entered the three day Western Quarter Horse Association event at Coos County fairgrounds July 4 to 6. Hyline Gentry ridden by Bob Avila won high point, with Bean Bag as reserve. award plaques went to Myrtle wood for deserving performances. Coos Bay riders won multiple placements across Open Trail, Showmanship, Horsemanship, and other classes. Lori Tyler and Tanmie Silva led youth categories from California and Shasta regions.

Motorcycle crash on Powers highway injures 2

State police report a July 6 motorcycle crash on Powers highway near Broad Bend. Driver Lyle Glenn Cummings 39 of Broadbent and his passenger son Derrell Howard Cummings 10 suffered cuts and bruises and were treated at Coquille Valley Hospital. Cummings cited for failure to maintain reasonable control.

McCall Wins All Around at Yoncalla Rodeo

Buck McCall from Myrtle Point earned the All Around cowboy honor at the Yoncalla Oregon rodeo on July 4 and 5 winning a saddle after first places in wild cow milking wild horse race and calf roping. Other local participants included Wayne Nelson Dan Lewis and Marty Wolford with top finishes in horse related events. At St Paul rodeo during the Fourth of July weekend Lyn Mays won the barrel racing title.
