Chamber members were told at the dinner meeting that the next tour meeting will be July 18 at the Coos County Fair Grounds. Harold Clarno invited the chamber and a stock judging contest with horse race judging explained for entertainment. Members were urged to reserve lunch with Russ Papineau at the Myrtle Hotel.
The Myrtle Point city council unanimously approved cruising its Sugar Loaf Mountain timber holdings estimated at around 2 percent million board feet. Elmer Jensen to conduct the cruise for the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs Eugene Parsons presented a flag to the council. The council also passed an ordinance to advertise property assessments for the Myrtle Crest sewer line.
Nine month old Dewey Sutphin of Myrtle Point won the Hiland Theatre Child Photo Personality contest as Irvin Edwards announced the results. Denise McCall of Canning Creek finished third with two finalists closer in voting. Final tallies show a close contest among seven finalists with scores near 200 to 300.
President Eisenhower signed a $33 billion highway bill that will launch the nation’s largest road program. Oregon is allotted $1,862,208 for first year primary and local highways and $13,575,755 for the interstate system, with Washington at $18,083,643. Oregon matches 10 percent for interstates and lesser roads. construction on interstates 90 and 30 is set to begin.
