North Beach California June Se Sheldon Sackett publisher of a Coos Bay Oregon newspaper and owner of several radio stations was arrested after 11 p m at the Purple Onion nightclub. He and an aide were taken to a city jail drunk tank after witnesses complained his shouts drowned the floor show. Police describe Sackett as highly intoxicated and unable to stand. Ball fines and loans were posted by Langdon W Post editor of Sackett s Epic Press.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to raise the federal gasoline tax from 3 to 4 cents to keep the interstate highway program alive. He warned that without funds, work on a 41 000 mile system across 36 states and the District of Columbia could halt within a year. Democratic leaders oppose the increase.
TOM FORREST of the Oregon Tile Trade Federation warns that raw sewage dumped by Powers city contaminates the Coquille River south fork. He cites typhoid germs, health risks, and ecological damage to dairy herds fish and children, urging Powers to install proper sewage facilities promptly.
Binger Hermann recalls attending Oregon’s first local school held in a small wood cabin. A pony ride through brush led to the setting where the school superintendent welcomed the writer among magazines and books on a pine table. The memory includes an official certificate excerpt from his father’s records.
