Voters will go to Myrtle Point City Hall on Tuesday July 6 from 8:00 a m to 6:00 p m to adopt or reject the 1948 48 city budget. The plan shows about 1000 under last year with funds for a new employee and a new fire truck. Precincts 54 and 55 will vote, names on the last assessment rolls eligible.
West Coast Telephone Company officials say Sunday service limits cause no money wiring from Myrtle Point and no night letters that day. They note the office is closed Sunday, with one operator handling all long distance calls and telegrams and night letters, which must go through the Went office.
Frank LeRoy Ward born February 22 1810 in Myrtle Point Oregon drowned last week at Empire Oregon. He served two years with Army Engineers in Alaska and two in Europe including The Battle of the Bulge The Rhine and the final battle for Germany. He is survived by his mother Mrs Gertrude Ward five brothers and two sisters. Interment at Ten Mile cemetery with Rev Appleyard officiating.
Myrtin Post No 38 American Legion received notice of the 1st Division Veterans annual reunion picnic to be held at Viking Park near Portland on Sunday July 18. Viking Park lies 16 miles east of Portland at Base Line Road and the Columbia River Highway at the Sandy River. Commander Mike A Trapman of 41st Division Post 183 extended the invitation to all post members and their friends.
Joe Nance formerly with Bhell Oil in Coquille has assumed management of the Union Station at Spruce and Eight streets. The H and S Service, previously run by Hall and Standley, will see Standley operate a welding and repair shop at the former H and S location. Nance arrived in Coquille about a year ago from Del Rio Texas after seven years in the armed services.
J C Roberts 71 Myrtle Point merchant and former Myrtle Point newspaper publisher died in Vancouver hospital last Friday. He was born September 1, 1877, in Myrtle Point and lived there until 1910 when he moved to Portland. Survived by wife Bessie of Vancouver, three sisters in Oregon and Washington, and three brothers. Funeral services were held at the Krapp chapel in Vancouver on Tuesday.
The Coos Curry Independent Timbermen’s Association forms a temporary committee led by Ben A. Bailey to establish a full time field manager. Glen Decker, experienced in Reedsport logging, will HQ in the Laird building with R. E. McKeever as secretary. The group plans to organize as a section of the Western Forest Industries Association to address local, state, and national issues.
The Coquille River Port Commission agrees to furnish river frontage for a new dock on the Coquille River near Norway. Myrtle Point Boating Rod and Gun Club discussed plans at a Monday meeting. The site lies downstream from the old creamery building and the 50 by 20 foot dock will include storage space. Construction will start soon.
Ralph E. Weekly has been promoted from Phc to Corporal by the 7th Infantry Division public relations office. Assigned to the Hourglass division band in Seoul Korea, he has served one year in the Army. He is a Myrtle Point High School graduate class of 1946 and the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Y. Syfert of this city.
W L Gage and Andrew Webber, owners of Harmony Mills, return ed Tuesday afternoon from a several days business trip to Eureka Cal.
Two members of the Coos County Youth Camp committee met at McKinley camp site to survey maintenance needs before opening on July 11. Attendees from Myrtle Point included Mr and Mrs Henry Schroeder Rev and Mrs Cochran and Mrs T G Sumeriin. Schroeder announced a work party from Myrtle Point to begin Friday to prepare the grounds. Camp Fire Girls will use the camp starting July 11 and remaining dates after August 15 are available. Groups may contact Mrs Richard J Hill in Coos Bay.
Rev W A Briggs announced a Methodist youth camp at Camp Myrtlewood opening Friday night July 2 for young adults aged twenty to forty with about 40 and 50 expected to attend. On July 4 the camp will release to allow about 100 high school students to enter for a weeklong session led by manager Rev Briggs and dean Rev Walter McArthur of Roseburg. Many attendees will come from southern Oregon.
Floyd E Summers today ends twenty three years of teaching service at Myrtle Fount elementary. As principal he oversaw over eight thousand students in grammar and junior high schools and more than nine hundred eighth grade graduates received diplomas. He is active in civic affairs and fraternal groups and plans full time focus on personal life. Summers will join Sykes Logging Company as an employee.
Coos County 4 H Club girls performed well at the Home Economics judging contest during 4 H summer school in Corvallis on June 22. Myrtle Point tied for third, Diane Hartley of Coos Bay tied for fifth, Phoebe Miller of Bays Point tied for second, Joe Coosa tied for third, and other competitors from Coos Bay Myrtle Point Leiston Bullards Eastside Virginia Corrie also placed among the top finishers.
Mr and Mrs O A Reed travel to San Bruno California to attend the military funeral of their son Private Harold Alvin Reed killed in action in World War II on June 24 1944 Reed entered service October 21 1943 while a junior at Myrtle Point High School He is survived by his parents two sisters Patricia and Mrs Robert King two brothers Ronald and Philip Ben and grandparents Mr and Mrs S S Reed of Myrtle Point.
John Devereaux Jr. was seriously injured Saturday while driving a bulldozer for Cameron Logging Co. when a tree fell and struck him. He was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene after a stop due to his condition. Chief Pharmacist Mate Linn Cooper and Mrs. Cooper arrived in San Francisco from Tsintao China to spend the Fourth of July with relatives in Dillard.
Mr Crim notes the rural Shady Cove Rotary is new with members living along the Rogue about 25 miles upstream from Morehead. Over 290 Rotarians from Southwestern Oregon and Portland attended the Saturday banquet at Flounce Rock Ranch owned by Mr and Mrs Nion R Tucker. Scott Leavitt district governor Rotary International No 162 spoke at the charter event.
Bus schedules out of Myris Pela and nearby stations were altered Wednesday morning for daylight saving time. Details show several departures and arrivals, including 7:00 a.m. and 7:28 p.m. windows, with Powers and Bowen routes adjusted to new times.
Mrs Dal King was elected president of the Coos County Library association at a recent meeting in Coquille. Mrs Howard Whitaker was named secretary with Mrs O C Sanford and Mrs William Candlin also chosen as vice president and treasurer respectively.
Stores and business houses in Myrtle Point will close on Monday July fourth for the double holiday. Many Fourth of July celebrations are planned statewide, with Coquille hosting a three day event featuring a band directed by Arnold Melby in the parade. Residents plan trips, visits, and fishing.
Paul F. Breuer was reelected to the Union High School District No. 3 board for five years after casting the heaviest ballot in years. The election drew 76 votes from 108 voters and was held at Union High School during afternoon and evening sessions.

Guy A. Wilberger, longtime resident of Myrtle Point, died in Los Angeles about eight years ago after spending over thirty years in Coos County. He had been in ill health for several years prior to his death, and the family anticipated arrival from California.
