City officials and merchants discuss plans to remodel the bank into a premier office, rebuild downtown into a modern shopping center, add a swimming pool, and complete the Bothwick street improvement district. Council members name projects including lake creation, school integrated pool, and broad street work.
Powers Park is accepted along Powers Highway between Broadbent and Gaylord. The report confirms the completion and opening status of the park segment linking key roads.
Greeter committee chair Chet Weed announced the chamber seeks an employee at 50 dollars monthly to call on newcomers. Merchants will contribute 3 dollars monthly to cover costs and will receive statements from the chamber office. Interested individuals contact Chet Weed at Myrtle News or Bill Knife at Knife Bros Jewelers.
A special film from the Divinity School of The Pacific will be shown at St Mark's Episcopal Church Sunday evening and at St Paul's in Powers after Sunday morning services. The showing was announced by Kanla Tetrick and will also be shown at the regular St Mark's Church Women meeting Monday per the vicar.
The Flora M. Laird Memorial Library receives a 54 volume Britannica Great Books set and an eight volume Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences. Also added are Americana encyclopedia 1962 30 volumes and Americana 1964. The works were purchased for college students at $4 but may be used by anyone. Britannica Great Books cost $206 and Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences $88, with library discounts included.
City crews are installing two large Pacific Power and Light signs in Myrtle Point. The wooden signs were stored at Hogan Realty after delivery prior to the Columbus Day storm and will be placed on the Gene Parsons property and at the Roseburg highway corner at C street.
Eugene and Myrtle Point subscribers to TV Systems cable are now receiving the rest station on the new service. The update expands channel availability for local viewers.
Walter Barklow, long time Myrtle Point pioneer and former county commissioner candidate, will be associated with Hogan Realty and Insurance. He has served on the county board and was active in local affairs for many years.
Agness community council election results announced this week list elected members Don Lucas Wesley Morgan Bernard Jackson E J Schneider Earl Ayers Bud Wood and Larry Lucas. About 50 people attended the annual meeting January 19 a potluck dinner.
The Presbyterian church honored Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroeder and Mrs. Florence Sumerlin at the annual meeting. Schroeder retired after long service as clerk of the session. Elders Don Wohler Freak Furman Elton Schroeder and others were elected or continuing in office along with several deacons and trustees.
The district 41 school board plans a calendar of budget hearings and a school budget election at an evening meeting. Past meetings and hearings are summarized, with mention of retirement age discussions for staff and a report on district testing. The board also heard a contract reading with Erichsen and Associates for a survey of Myrtle Point schools to guide building plans.
Suburban Gas manager Jim Delvin announced the office will relocate February 1 to a newly constructed facility at First and Maple streets in Myrtle Point.
Explorer Post 99 settled a deadlocked election for president after a recount left Ed Wells tied. Dick Mooney, former secretary, won by a narrow margin. other officers elected include Ray Daniels vice president Mike Hogan secretary Bruce Winningham treasurer and Dennis Sullivan quartermaster. The post grew to become the largest in the Oregon Trail Council under Bill Shires.
Tol R Wise Market marks its seventh anniversary with an open house and refreshments for friends and customers. Al Shirtcliff and Clarence Owens announce hundreds of special prices and invite everyone to visit during the celebration.
The Lions Club will play the Jaycees at the high school gym Sunday January 27 at 2 p m in a wild basketball battle for the March of Dimes. Players are expected to be outfitted in bloomers for this any thing goes charity game. Everyone is urged to attend.
Patrolman Lloyd Hawkins spotted flames at 870 Hawkins Street early Sunday. He battled the blaze with a garden hose before firefighters arrived, saving the home and its occupants amid a roof blaze likely sparked by a flue issue.
Muriel Paulsen, 41, was appointed by the county board to fill the unexpired term of County Clerk Georgianna Vaughan. Vaughan resigns effective Feb 1, and the term runs to December 31, 1006. Paulsen was the first clerk in the county tax department.
A 1968 claim involves Suan Fell and Milton Schroeder with a disputed sum of 9600.08 traced from 1961. The docket references Festal receipts totaling 981071.46 and 1608 receipts amounting to 1901.98 in a historical financial dispute.
Coquille Red Devils defeated Myrtie Point 36 to 34 to even their league record at 1-1. Coach Grove lamented too many costly mistakes as the late stretch proved decisive. Richard Gasemen started a late push for Coquille while Point battled hard in a tight finish.
