Myrtle Point classified employees and the school board met Monday night to discuss a 6 percent cost of living increase for the 1969 70 school year plus annual raises. They also requested paid holidays for 9 month staff and a double raise for one classified employee. The board delayed action.
The board accepted a 10 000 bid by Bob Hogan and Arnold Atkinson for Spruce School including grounds and buildings as is except a 20 by 250 foot east strip turned over to the city. Hogan plans conversion to an apartment. Two teachers quit, Miss Helen Guy and Mrs W Williams. Miss Guy leaves Jan 24 and Mrs Williams by year end. Verity Petre hired to replace Guy. A vocational high school proposal was discussed for Myrtle Point Coquille Bandon Powers. A salary committee will meet teachers before the next hearing.
Assessor Francis R Flanagan says notices of assessed value increases will mail in late February to taxpayers with adjustments. Increases stem from new construction remodels and revaluations in Lastside North Bend and Coos Bay. Timber land values rise per the state Tax Commission. If disputes arise, contact the assessors office by April 18 1969. Public libraries to receive all 1969 House bills via Rep Jack Ripper with calendars and indexes for local access.
Associate Supreme Court Justice Ailfred Goodwin praised Coos County as he spoke at the dedication of the Robert C. Belloni Boys Forest Ranch Sunday. The ranch, built with local leadership and contributions, is named after U.S. District Court Judge Belloni, who previously served as circuit court judge for the county.
Broadbent P T O invites all to a Tuesday January 21 6:00 PM meeting in the Broadbent school cafeteria. Myrtle Point Police Chief Merle Hathaway will speak on narcotics in the area and what is being done. Baby sitting and refreshments will be provided.
Senior OSU home economics enrollees or students may apply for the Fay Schoole craft Home Economics Award funded by twenty four extension units. Application forms are at the Coos County Extension Office and due March 1, 1969. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Myrtle Creek Gym January 20 from 3 to 7 p.m. Donors are urged as flu shortages reduce supply. Credit will be given to organizations making donations. Call 572-5420 for blood needs and credit.
Myrtle Point Myrtle Lodge 78 A F and A M held a special St John Day meeting in the Masonic hall to install 1969 officers led by installing officer Bill Winningham. New officers include J D Hatfield as worshipful master Ed Kirkpatrick senior warden Bot Hogan junior warden Harry Hubbell secretary Ben Daniels treasurer T J Farmer senior deacon Bill Huff senior steward George D Hall junior steward Arthur Motz junior deacon Bill Winningham tyler Bill Downing chaplain and Laurence Mullen marshal. Arthur Motz gave a musical reading and two myrtlewood pillars were presented by Kenneth Laird and accepted by Robert Sheedy past master. Daniel Baptist of Research Lodge of Oregon spoke on the history of the Pillars of Solomon.
High school graduates from Coos Bay North Bend Coquille Myrtle Point and Bandon may apply for the 500 Step to Knowledge scholarship from the O N C Scholarship Foundation. The program now in its eleventh year targets 36 grants with judging by local business leaders including Jack Brookins SWOCC president. Applications due by April at school principals. CAP meeting set for January 16 at Myrtle Point city hall to aid the poor and aged programs.
Oregon Dairymen's Association plans the 75th annual meeting January 15 17 in Salem at the Marion Hotel to address out of state milk imports and dairy marketing. Officials including Cecil Johnson Walter Leth and Frank Rood will discuss production efficiency herd health taxation and Northwest outlook with a banquet speaker Robert Selkirk. An all star wrestling match from New Zealand headlines Myrtle Point events February h on the sports page.
The Coos Bay Library hosts a five program series titled Knowing the Score on consecutive Fridays through February 14. Edgar H. Smith of Oregon College of Education speaks on music listening pleasure. Tickets at the door or via DCE Roseburg.
State senator Sam Dement of Coos and Curry counties has been appointed to several committees for the Sith session of the Oregon Legislature. He serves as vice chairman of Labor and Industry, Highways, Health and Welfare, and Election committees, with Red McKensie noted as a representative.
