Clarence Ralpha city dispatcher tracks daily rainfall from a rain gauge and notes when rainfall fails in four hours or the river hits 30 feet. He informs the Medfors weather bureau and the Army Engineers in Salem for forecast guidance and river-rise estimates. He compiles yearly rainfall data from these observations.
Clarence Ralph records daily high and low temperatures in Myrtle Point using two thermometers. After each day’s readings, the devices are reset for the next day. Ralph compiles an annual report of high, low and average temperatures for the city.
Clarence Ralph reports Myrtle Point weather for 1966 showing total rainfall 50.47 inches, higher than 41.93 inches in 1965. The year featured a 99 degree high on Aug 20, a 23 degree low on Jan 21, and several high water readings on Jan 4, Jan 6, Mar 9, and Dec 5.
Becky Siemer finished first in a written home making knowledge and attitude exam for senior girls on December 8 at Myrtle Point High. The 1987 winner earns state and national scholarships and a specially designed silver charm from General Mills as sponsor of the Betty Crocker Search.
Coquille Valley Elks vote to curtail operations at the Elks Club with kitchen closed and limited bar hours 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Lodge nights and Saturdays see later hours. Club closed Mondays. golf course remains open daily. Reopening possible when patronage justifies it.
Emily Capps of Bandon won first in the girls division and Rob Wakefield of Coquille won first in the boys division in the Elks leadership contest. Army Specialist Tommy Gallino of Myrtle Point arrived in Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division. Election of Ellis Golf Association officers elected Gary Morris as president with Jack Sturza and Anay Gowen in key roles. Blaze Elks Golf Tournament slated for Labor Day weekend at the Coquille Valley Elks course.
Eighty six Southwestern Oregon Community College students with at least 12 term hours earned honor grades in the fall term. Seven students achieved straight A’s. area graduates Linda Warner Countryman Kim W Fain Jack G Thomas Barbara Brister Rosetta Hurst Michael P Johnson and Lela Northup Broadbent are listed among honorees. Women’s volleyball begins January 18 at Maple Primary School gym 7 30 to 9 30 p m with a small fee. contact Mrs. Ernest Evernden at 72 5731 after 5 p.m.
The new Supplementary Medical Insurance under Social Security costs 3 dollars a month and covers 80 percent of reasonable doctor charges after 50 dollars in yearly expenses. Beneficiaries should note the new year 1967 starts with a 50 dollar deductible. any deductible portion met in late 1966 may apply to 1967.
In 1966 Myrtle Point issued 51 building permits, totaling 241 800 dollars in work, down from 61 permits and 141 500 dollars in 1965. Most spending went to Myrtle Trees Motel, Myrtle Hotel addition, and the new fair grounds building.
A teenage fund raising committee organizes the March of Dimes campaign in Myrtle Point and nearby areas during January. Sheryl Huntley, Myrtle Point community chairman, coordinates contributions with a deadline of January 28.
At the first meeting on January 9 the Agricultural record keeping class sponsored by SWOCC changed from 7 to 8 pm for convenience. The practical college credit course targets farmers. Weekly sessions continue Mondays in the MPHS Agriculture classroom with instructors Dean Mason, a local accountant, and Thomas Crukshank from Marshfield High.
Lions Club president Ross Pinkley announced a rematch blood drive with the Rotary Club on January 30 in Myrtle Point. The bloodmobile will be at Myrtle Point. Rotary outdid Lions by several pints last time. Donations in each club’s name encouraged. The goal is 75 units. Beer and food may be donated.
Postmaster Schroeder warns that destroying mail receptacles is a federal offense with penalties up to $1,000 fine or three years in jail. He notes 325000 boxes damaged nationally and 2641 arrests in the year ending January 30 for mailbox vandalism.
