Flood conditions isolate Coquille river valley towns as a new storm dumps heavy rain and winds. The Coquille rose to 176 feet at Powers, closing roads and prompting evacuations while civil defense considers a disaster declaration.
The Bill Ball family escaped a deadly flood at 11 p.m. on Gravel Ford Road near Bennett Park when their Volkswagen was swept into seven feet of water. Mr Ball pried free, swam with his wife and three children to safety as neighbors and Roger Whetham offered aid and blankets. The ordeal left the family shaken but unharmed.
Red Cross coordinator Curt Beckham announced a Monday Bloodmobile visit at Myrtle Crest school from 3 to 7 pm Donors are asked to give for Ora Lytle needing 3 pints, Paul Detefsen’s family’s 25 pints, Danny Brown’s 30 pints after leg amputation and Jake Otter’s six pints. Also Myrtle Point hosts Pacific at 7 pm as Bobcats wrestle for a win under Coach Muck with key pins planned.
Sears Roebuck is inviting inquiries about opening a local sales agency in Myrtle Point. Letters have been sent to residents asking about interest and referrals. Firms discuss locations, but no definite plan exists and the field remains open to qualified applicants.
Administrators assume control of Mast Hospital with Charles Gustafson of Medford and Philip Huntley of Ashland taking on leadership roles. Both bring prior experience to the new management team as the facility transitions in early January.
Mrs Carpenter welcomes an 18 month old daughter alongside a newborn born at Mast Hospital at 1 48 pm on January 5 1966. A photo of the family will appear in next week's Herald.
Dr Grant E Blanch of Oregon State University will discuss the One and One-Half Per cent Property Tax Limitation Proposal at the 31st annual Coos County Livestock association meeting in Coquille Saturday January 8. The program includes agency reports from BLM Coos Forest Protective Assn ASCS Extension Service and Wildlife Service with a noon luncheon film and plans for 1906.
