Myrtle Point’s basketball team clinched second place after a 42 to 36 victory over Marshfield Pirates. North Bend trails, Marshfield leads Coos County as tournament play begins Friday with Myrtle Point meeting Coquille Bad Devils and North Bend facing Marshfield.
Dean Heistand junior in agriculture won first prize in the Future Farmer speaking contest sponsored by Myrtle Point Security Bank. Heistand spoke on how Coos County dairy farmers can aid the war effort by maintaining a small sheep flock. The event was held last Friday in the assembly room of Myrtle Point Union High School. Heistand will travel to Roseburg for the Oregon district public speaking contest with five other officers. Other local winners included Gene Hansen second, Jack Thompson third, Glenn Daniels fourth, and John Neal fifth. Prizes ranged from six to two dollars. Moving to Spokane, Edger Rickard and family will relocate their household goods this week, with Mrs Rickard and children staying with her parents in town until their Spokane home is ready.
George L Maynard of Ill e waa freed rem c man slaughter for the killing of Henninger 27 by the Coon grand jury which returned a true bill last Friday. Maynard a major and held on 3000 bail since the death at a party December 1. The grand jury found Henninger died from suffocation after blood from a broken nose pinned him to the floor but Maynard’s liability insufficient for trial on man slaughter. A not true bill was returned on the charge of detiving while drunk against Frank W Cook. Delbert F Brown of W North Bend was indicted for assault with a dangerous weapon and J C Kettler for obtaining money under false pretenses.
The Picassot Valley home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilton James burned last week destroying the house. Mrs. James sustained severe burns to arms hands and face and has been hospitalized since the fire. Mr. James wore gloves but suffered burns on both arms above them.
The OPA lifted restrictions on recapping passenger car and light truck tires using reclaimed rubber at the start of the week. Those needing recaps can proceed without a rationing board order. Gasoline rationing and the 85 mile per hour speed limit remain in effect.
