Annual Red Cross Drive Planned for Myrtle Point

March brings Red Cross War Fund drive with local chair Henry Schroeder guiding Myrtle Point efforts. County goals set at 31 461 with a local quota of 4 635 as clergy urged support and volunteers, including church groups in uniform sections, for the 1944 objective. Mayor Clinton urges the community to back Red Cross Sunday and Red Cross Month with financial aid and volunteer service.

Food Preservation class opens with seven enrolled

Seven members joined the first meeting in the Union High School home economics room last Monday. Miss Dorothy Gurney outlined topics for future sessions and the group chose discussions for planning a year long family food supply and gardening. Ted Kirsch will cover gardening while processing methods and storage will be taught by Miss Gurney. Meetings are set for Tuesdays at 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with enrollment open to all.

Busterud Co To Operate Two Sawmills

The Busterud Lumber Company takes over the Rock Creek mill once owned by Mrs. George Bryant and plans to run it on a lease basis using Bryant timber. A second mill is set to open next week on the George Hermann property near Broadbent to process fir timber. Each mill aims for about ten thousand feet daily and hires roughly ten workers plus loggers.

Radio Broadcast From Tokyo Talks With POW Boys

Mrs Preston Phillips reports hearing a short wave Tokyo broadcast in which three American boys held as prisoners of war spoke to home folks. The program aired about 1 15 p m and one boy is in the same camp as Major Eugene Laird of Myrtle Point. The boys, captured after the fall of the Philippines and Corregidor, said they had plenty to eat and little mail. Mrs Phillips wrote to the boys families. addresses include Brooklyn New York Sidney Texas and a North Dakota location.

Davenport Family Trip East Details

Take Trip East Mr and Mrs A R Davenport returned last Thursday from a month long journey to Texas to visit their son A C Ernest E Davenport and three daughters in California while traveling by bus and train. Their son finished army pilot training in Texas and moved to San Angelo for basic training. In California they visited Lois Schmidt in Los Angeles Andy Holt in Cloverdale and Mary Gracelon in Scotia. In Crescent City they visited Davenport's niece Wid Johnson and family formerly Marjorie Blingaby.

Local Store Ships Discarded Hose for War Effort

The Myers and Myera Store ships used silk and nylon hosiery to the Defense Supplies corporation in Philadelphia for parachute and military gear. Nine pounds were sent in a recent shipment, with prior consignments totaling 32 pounds, amounting to 4 pounds previously. Local women are urged to bring worn stockings to aid the war effort.

Bravery Medal for Arctic Rescue by Guerin Relatives

Sgt Eckley K Guerin and a fellow soldier earned the Soldiers Medal for evacuating two acutely ill men during a fog shrouded Aleutian mission. A rescue vessel braved heavy seas to retrieve a patient with appendicitis and then ferried another soldier with a tooth infection to shore.

Myrtle Point Bobcats fell 42 to 41 at Marshfield Pirates in a fast paced game decided in the final minutes. Had Myrtle Point won, they would have pursued a pennant with North Bend. instead they drop into a fight for second place as the season ends. Coquille defeated 54 to 27 on the home floor earlier. no league tournament this year due to transportation issues.

Death of 12 year old after appendicitis operation

Marlin Spencer Edward Spencer 12 son of Mr and Mrs Rolla Spencer of Marshfield died at Knife hospital in Coquille this morning. Burial is set for Saturday at Catching Creek cemetery. Funeral service by Rev T J Pryor at Schroeder funeral chapel Myrtle Point at 2 PM. Pneumonia followed a postoperative decline after an appendicitis operation Tuesday. The Spencers formerly lived on Catching Creek, she being the former Madge Lakey of Myrtle Point.

Bundles for America volunteers sent 104 garments to Los Angeles for armed forces. A Dec 1 shipment added 100 more items. The latest consignment includes 8 sweaters 18 chest protectors 34 scarves 16 gloves and 26 helmets. Oregon has two groups Myrtle Point and Coquille.

Picture Depicts Farm Methods

Three reels of moving pictures were shown at Union High School last Thursday from 10 to 12 to students in agriculture and visiting farmers. Clyde Walker of USC presented the labor saving methods on the farm with County Agent George Jenkins and assistant Jim Bishop contributing to the discussion. About 400 attended and learned what is being done in Oregon and nationwide.

Funeral rites held for George Haughton at Myrtle Point

Funeral services were conducted at Schroeder chapel in Myrtle Point for George RB Haughton 58 of Norway who died at Mast hospital from pneumonia after recovering from a prior illness. Rev T J Pryor led the service and interment followed in Norway cemetery. He was born June 19 1884, married Bernice Slater in Eugene Feb 6 1923, and leaves seven children Robert Dorothy Ellen Ruth Phillip Charles and Mark plus his widow brother Richard and sisters Lillie Perry and Mabel Barklow.

Bridge Community Bonds Sold To Support Grange and School

The Bridge community completed a bond sale totaling 2600 dollars to aid the Grange and local grade school. A major share came from a Friday Feb 12 social with baskets and a bond auction led by John Koch. Lawrence Knight cited 25.75 raised for March of Dimes at a Feb 5 dance and bake sale. Mr and Mrs Ernest Wilson sold property to Mr and Mrs Otis Bennett of Grants Pass and plan to return to Washington.

Cannery Skills Class Held At Local High School

A community course on feeding and processing feeds is open to residents. The first session occurred and will continue Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 led by Gurney, home economics instructor at the high school.

The Army film This Is the Army, featuring Army personnel and Hollywood stars, will run for three days starting Sunday in a major attraction. Irving Berlin wrote the music and 50 percent of the pressings go to emergency ring relief.
