Local Bond Drive Nets Big Total for Community
County sales reached 2 221 449 dollars against a 1 618 700 quota as progress continued on E bonds. The Home Front Heroes program by the American Legion and Hiland Theatre honored junior high and grade school sellers with commissions from one to colonel levels. Free movie admission at Hiland Theatre on Feb 24 rewarded buyers and those purchasing at the theatre office.

Oregon extension officials report at a regional garden conference that about 200000 victory gardens existed last year. Of these 148000 were in cities and 55000 on farms, meaning around 90 percent of households cultivated gardens.

Aubrey Strong reports from a 40 day furlough on a naval battle near Bougainville during October 6 1943. The destroyers Selfridge Chevalier and O Bannon engaged Japanese warships. Selfridge sank after torpedo hits while supporting crew suffered deaths and injuries. Selfridge later returned to port under its own power after extensive repairs and over 7000 miles of sea movement.

City Gardens Support Boost From National Victory Drive
The conference backed city gardens and urged nationwide adoption. H. W. Hochbaum, head of the national victory garden committee, noted home demonstration agents in 18 Oregon counties promoting soil conservation. The Oregon report says more than 4 million pounds of food were saved and stored last summer.

Hubert Harry Dies After Fall From Spar Pole
Hubert L. Harry 48 died from injuries after a fall from a spar pole at Bay company camp near Fairview around 9 00 AM. He was taken to Coquille Hospital and died at 11 30 AM. Funeral held at Schroeder Funeral chapel Coquille. Survived by wife Violet Ohisen and ten children. Also survived by father Grant W. Harry Marshfield brother Joseph L. Harry and sisters Chioe Tennison Maude Cox and Beryl Syphera. Veteran of World War I and member of VFW and Eagles lodge.

War Food Admin proposes 1944 farm support prices in Oregon

North Bend defeats Myrtle Point 46 to 37 at the North Gym, led by Noel with 18 points while Don Sutphin had 16 for Myrtle Point. Myrtle Point second string also beat North Bend second string 20 to 9 in the prelim. The Bobcats finish the season with a home game Friday February 26.

Broadbent on February 17 hosted an old time auction at the Broadbent gym where War Bonds were bought by bidders totaling 1578.50. The event, sponsored by the Broadbent Extension unit and Leaders organization, also raised funds from pie and coffee sales. Total with prior bond purchases neared $2,000. E. L. Clausen acted as auctioneer.

Dr E E Beber of Must hospital will report for six weeks training at Carlisle Barracks Pa and then proceed to Springfield Mo for further instruction. Commissioned as a first lieutenant he traveled to Portland to arrange uniforms and business before departure. Mrs Beber and their son Saeel plan to stay with her parents as they relocate temporarily.

Mrs Milton Roth Funeral Friday
Local residents mourn the death of Mrs. Milton Roth at Pleasant Point after a two week illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2:00 PM at Schroeder Funeral chapel Myrtlé Point with T. J. Pryor presiding. Interment will follow in a Coquille cemetery. Mrs Roth, born February 6 in a Burns hospital, was the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Watson. She married Sept 4 and is survived by her husband and her parents.
