Myrtle Point Woman's club invites all local women to a Monday afternoon meeting at 2 PM in the Presbyterian church parlors. Dr H K Marion Mast will speak on a vital subject. county health nurse Lola Elrod will discuss county conditions and remedies.
The city council met with all members present to adopt an ordinance directing the city recorder and mayor to proceed with grading and execution of work for the pump house pile in Coquille. Mayor E Barker and council members Breuer McNair Bring Sumernan Martinond Evans attended.
The Church of the Brethren in Portland opened evangelistic services last Tuesday evening drawing a large crowd. Evangelist HM G Shank preached on making Jesus Christ's religion testable by everyday life. Services run nightly except Saturdays for at least two weeks with 7 30 pm openings, motion and film projections, religious and educational elements, and special music. The church welcomes the Myre Point community to attend.
The local WCTU held a Friday evening program at the Brethren church with hymns, a prayer, solos, talks by Mrs Lattoon and Mrs For, and a safety drama. Louise Epperton and others spoke as a county WCTU institute meets the next Tuesday in the Christian church with a noon covered dish. Judson Cornwall won the Bible reading contest and will advance to the county event in Coquille.
Junior and Senior Women's clubs hold a doughnut sale this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The booth is between the Pearce garage and the Safeway. Proceeds go to the college scholarship loan fund.
The Herald displays two Maine time photos donated by Don Nelson of Myrtle Point. One shows the Myrtle Paint mill south fork around 34 years ago with foreman Fred McLon and workers. The second depicts the Norway school era near the present Norway store around 40 years ago with teacher Miss Minnie McCloskey Lester and local residents. Also notes several arrests including Geiffth Griffith in North Bend for drunken on a public highway, Robey Hamercy for vagrancy, and Wilfred Childers for possession of venison.
Fred True of Broadbent has purchased land along the road from W A Roselle and aims to establish a Broadbent post office with Roselle as postmaster. Roselle will enlarge the store, build post office quarters, and move to Tulelake California after government approval. Miss Maxine Evernden is expected to continue duties in Broadbent.
Monday night meeting of the Marshfield RNA camp included deputy Mrs Anne Montgomery finalizing plans for a rally to be held in Marshfield next Monday. Miss Whitle and Mrs Francis Floyd received gifts for perfect attendance last year. A silver offering was taken for the Battleship Oregon memorial. Guests included Mrs Leonore Montgomery and Mrs Luella Curtis.
The district board of ministers met Tuesday afternoon to plan the year’s program for the district. Thursday the Brethren ministers gathered to prepare for the conference at Myrtle Wood camp near Bridge soon. Visiting ministers include Rev A J Ellenberger of Ashland Rev H H Ritter of Mabel Rev R Ho Miller and Rev H G Shank of Portland with public invited to attend any meeting.
Miss Vashon Hall daughter of Mr and Mrs David L Hall of Myrtle Point wed Herman Nelson son of Mr and Mrs Ervin Nelson in Coquille. Engaged by Justice Clarence Barton the ceremony followed a 1938 engagement. The bride attended local high school graduating in 1937 while the groom works at a regional project. The couple reside in Radobaugh apartments as newlyweds with well wishers surprising them after a basketball game.
Scouts from every city in the state will attend the Girl Scout Pacific Coast Renewal conference in Portland on March 3, 4 and 5. Mia Cherie Mae Hartwell will represent Bridge, with a regional staff guest lineup highlighted as national observers.
A photograph shows Lady Anne Cavendish daughter of the Marquis of Titchfield. Her name has been tied romantically to King Leopold of the Belgians. Leopold and his mother visited Walbeck Abbey where the grandfather of Lady Anne resides.
An American Negroes topic program by Mr. Hugh Mitchelmore at the Presbyterian church explored mission work among Negroes in the South and Africa. Speakers praised George Washington Carver, Paul Robeson, Dr Irvin W Underhill, and missionary Ernest Moser, with songs by Mrs Schaad and Zella May Moon. Twenty five were present.
The Myrtle Point Bobcats defeated the Roseburg Indians 35 to 32 in a close game. Rutter opened with a basket, Hatfield led Roseburg, and Dement led Bobcats with 15 points while Campbell and Rutter had seven for Roseburg.
Mayor Barker sent a letter to the League of Oregon Cities praising SERA and WPA relief units. He notes 5000 feet of sewer and 14000 feet of water pipe completed, with city contributions exceeding the required share, and credits the federal project system with sustaining self respect and honest labor among workers.
The Bobcats topped the Marshfield Pirates 46 to 15 at Myrtle Point to seize early county race control. Myrtle Point led 14 to 7 after a fast first quarter, then held Marshfield scoreless in the second as the Bobcats pulled ahead 29 to 7 at halftime. Demon led with 16, Sprague 12, while Hanson had five for Marshfield. The district tournament is set for March 4 and 5 at North Bend High gym with Ed Sigmund refereeing. Myth Point faces Roseburg or Coquille in the opening game.
The court news lists naturalization for Ernest Bendschneider and others from Bridge Power s and mentions Earl Graham Robert Lyon Ligat George Redney and Fred Clauson as British and Swedish natives. Attorney Guy Cordon of Roseburg represents Coos and Douglas counties to push a congressional act for a larger share of proceeds from the Coos Bay Wagon Road grant lands within those counties.
Deputy collectors from the Internal Revenue Service will assist taxpayers in preparing 1937 returns. They will be in Marshfield for the rest of this week through Saturday February 26 and in North Bend next Monday February 28.
Mrs. Jessie Ingram announces a March series of Project Leaders Extension meetings in Coos County. Community representatives from Coquille and Oregon State College will lead sessions on purchasing cost and materials for kitchen equipment, including a pressure cooker demonstration, with dates across Coos River Bullards Sumner Arago Gravelford Lee Bandon Allegany Bridge Catching Inlet North Bayside Norway Powers Green Dell Dew Valley Millington and other communities.
The Townsend club meets at the hall on Sunday Feb 20 and approves a pie social and program for Friday March 4 at 8 p.m. Pies brought by ladies will be auctioned with maker names. buyers provide partners for the pie supper. Extra pies sold by piece. Coffee and sugar supplied. Public invited free. Next Sunday a Townsend mass meeting is planned at Langlois with a 9:45 a.m. car from town and 10 a.m. ride to Coquille. noon basket dinner. Dr Gordon Ware of Portland will speak as Oregon Townsend representative.
Myrtle Point plumber W R Pohl found a weathered pocketbook on the Herald building roof. It contained slips showing Mrs H Fitzsimmons and belonged to her daughter Joan lost near Thanksgiving. The purse held about one dollar, and the lender likely realized a larceny was not intended but the act still implies theft under the law.

Leonard E Watkins and Mildred Oces peas nee fonc ed a license. Ray Clinton and Gladys F Weber issued a license. Karl Adams femant of Coulis son and Margaret Lever of Mevinville obtained a license. Melvin Shults and Lelyan E Shults of Marshfield secured a license at the county clerk office.
Sixty one Myrtle Point FFA chapter youths enter the public speaking contest with five to seven minute speeches followed by a one minute Q&A. Two top speakers from each class advance to the final at the local grange. Security Bank Myrtle Point offers 9 3 2 prizes and silver buckle for best speaker. The winner travels to Grants Pass March 26 for sectional contest.
Southwestern Oregon Funeral Directors set May 19 20 21 for the Oregon Funeral Directors association state convention at the Chandler Hotel. Guests will include national funeral directors leaders and state presidents from California Washington Idaho and Montana.
Families in the Hoffman bridge district met at a home last week to discuss bringing electric lights and power to their area. Residents urged action and formed a committee to pursue service.
