Landowners Protest Zone Ordinance at Coquille Meeting

Coquille landowners packed the community building to challenge the county zoning ordinance as hearings continue across the county. Speakers pressed for home-grown zoning, warned of higher land taxes, and debated agricultural value vs future development. A follow-up meeting is planned for February 20 to draft petitions for a public vote. Also noted were a Myrtle Point Adventist youth missionary event and choir performance on Saturday.

Farmers Protest Tax Demands At County Meeting

The Myrtle Grange hall drew farmers Thursday evening February 11 to oppose rising taxes and discuss education costs. Virginia Ramberg of Fairview route introduced the county zoning ordinance for discussion as residents urged land development free choice and described experiences with regimentation elsewhere.

Bobcats Stretch Sunset Lead With Victory Over Brookings

Bobcats defeated Brookings 63-48 to seize first place in the Sunset Conference as Myrtle Creek and other teams faced off. Don led with 12 points, Terry Pullen added 12 in a 46-28 third-quarter run while Bill Neal contributed 12 in the second half, and Myrtle Point beat the Vikings 67-31.

Drive Begins 1965 Heart Fund Campaign

Myrtle Point launches the 1965 Heart Fund drive February 21 to 27 with the Have a Heart theme. Heart headquarters next to The Herald office will stay open through March 2, volunteers will distribute red broken hearts to residents and shoppers to be matched with half hearts for a gift, as fundraisers ask for community support for heart disease research.

Anna Guerin 87 Dies After Lifelong Community Service

Anna Guerin died February 11 at age 87. A Myrtle Point resident, she served as treasurer trustee and deaconess at Myrtle Point Presbyterian Church. She held 50 years in the Eastern Star and was a charter member of the Women’s Club. She and her late husband ran the Guerin Hotel after moving to Myrtle Point in 1900.
