The community mourns Mrs. Jas. Cook known as Mamma Cook for her sunny disposition despite losing both legs. Her cheerful outlook and laughter brightened others, and she will be remembered fondly by all who knew her. The piece also begins The Tale of a Cat, noting cats' perceived limited intelligence beyond instinct.
In a Cave Bay Times letter Elva Patten of North Bend accuses Republicans of labeling Democrats as Communists. The Myrtle Point Herald defends the two party system, condemns such insinuations, and warns against labeling the Democratic Party as subversive.
Myrtle Crest eighth grade class hosts a talent show on February 26 at the school. Admission is 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults. Proceeds support a radio and public address system for the school.
Dairymen and stockmen in Southern Coos county learn that Dr Arnold H Gardner formerly of Oregon City is now in Myrtle Point at 803 Spruce St. Office hours are 9 to 6. He holds degrees from Washington State College and practiced in Salem. He served four years in the Army Air Force in World War II.
Fifth Air Force units in Korea receive hundreds of pounds of clothing and toys from Myrtle Point Broadbent Sitkum ponville Coos Bay and North Bend donors. Major S R Dayton recalls visiting an orphanage and explains the drive funded by local residents including the Myrtle Crest school Lions club Rotary WLCS and several churches.
Cub Scouts plan a Blue and Gold Banquet on Wednesday Feb 24 at Myrtle Crest school cafeteria. The 44th anniversary of the Boy Scout movement will be celebrated with a 6 30 dinner, choral numbers, awards, songs, and an address by Rev B J Clark. Arlo Duncan emphasizes parent attendance for awards and family participation.
Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce members voted unanimously to join a seven county chamber, seeking benefits from a proposed all county organization led by President Frank Meldrum. A committee proposed issuing a new chamber booklet in a 2500 print run to keep information current and allow more frequent updates.
Coos County officials report Sheriff William F Hewell, 73, will not run for another term after 20 years in office. He cites a desire for a long vacation and to let others lead. Democratic candidates Richard Vines and Gus Kohler have filed. Harold Clarno and V A Am Roush attended a Grants Pass fair board meeting.
Coos County moves toward a modified certified Bangs free area in dairy and beef stock after County Judge J W Harrison and State Veterinarian K J Peterson signed the application, pending federal approval in Washington D C. The move follows a long local effort starting in 1929 with voluntary control areas in northern Coos County and later in Bandon and Brewster Valley.
Myrtle Point Bobcats finish the 1953-54 basketball season with a 56 to 54 victory over Bandon. Pepper Baker led the Bobcats with 16 points while Wimp Hastings dominated for Bandon before fouling out in the third.
Dr. James Millar of the Good Citizenship Foundation warned about white superiority and urged lifting living standards for all races. Speaking at the Lincoln Day banquet in Coos Bay, he said brown, yellow, and black races are not inferior and urged unity to avert a revolution.
The Mittle Paint watch tower began operations with planes reported by 6 pm as Mayor Jack Dunn served as first watcher. Chief observer Mrs Chester Cook said the tower runs 11 hours daily until more volunteers join. V F W auxiliary provided coffee and cake to visitors. a Herald reporter witnessed a plane overhead and a photo appears next week with Sergeant Wheatley explaining the project’s national importance.
High winds last Friday kept the VFW from displaying flags on Myrtle Point streets for Lincoln's birthday. Flags will be shown on Spring Dollar Day to compensate for the missed display February 13.
Six contractors submitted bids for the basic library building, with Harold Grappe of Coos Bay offering the lowest base bid at 23 526 and 60 days construction, though alterations may affect final choice. The council will open bids at the first March meeting and select the best bid for city interests. Heating plant bids are expected later.
Mayor Jack Dunn of Myrtle Point was chosen president of the Coos and Curry Bar Association at its 45th annual meeting in Gold Beach. Dave Shaw of Gold Beach was elected vice president and Maurice Englegan of Coquille was named secretary. Attorneys from Myrtle Point included Dunn Frank Meldrum and E C Roberts.
For the first time, Myrtle Point now has city mail delivery. Carriers Robert Vauclair and Ralph Todd began their daily routes with the mail as staff adjust to the new plan amid initial challenges.
Richard E. Vines known as Nick, Myrtle Point police chief, files as Democrat candidate to succeed Sheriff William Mowell who has held office 20 years. Vines pledges active county wide law enforcement and plans to run a campaign slogan focusing on effectiveness.
