Funeral services were held January 30 for Earle Osborne a former Myrtle Point resident and retired US Air Force Colonel. He died January 27 at his Mesa Arizona home. He is survived by his wife Deloris two daughters his mother Mrs Mike Philip of North Bend a sister Mrs Harold Belloni of Newport two brothers Jack of Springfield and Lee of Seattle and Belloni’s son Richard. A Masonic service led by Rev Kenneth Backwald of the United Church of Christ followed the funeral attended by family members from Myrtle Point and nearby areas.

Three Myrtle Point High School students won firsts at the Bandon Invitational Speech Tournament held Sat Feb 4. Beck Mast won serious interpretation. Walter Hogan won radio commentary. Les Walker won humorous interpretation. Seven of ten contestants reached finals across four categories with judges including Mr Robert Hogan and speech coach Mrs Manley Starr.

Area Action Group Elects Officers in Myrtle Point
The Myrtle Point area council of the Southwestern Oregon Community Action Committee met February 9 in city hall. Mrs Bertha Hamilton and Tom Cribns led the election of officers with Claud Randleman as chairman Ruth Michelle as secretary. Victor Stevens was chosen as local unit representative to the Southwestern Oregon chapter and Mrs Orville Brown as alternate. The group will meet the first Thursday each month at 7:30 PM in the city council chamber.

School board approves principal renewals and staff raises
At the February 8 meeting of district 41, Supt. Joe Stewart recommended renewal terms for principals. Phillip Schermerhorn and William Richardson receive one year renewals, with Richardson’s salary rising from 10 616 to 12 021. Bridge school principal recommendation withheld. Jim King offered a three year contract with 11 months per year from 10 800 to 12 050. Vorlin Hermann announced certified staff voted to accept a 5600 base raise with full insurance after a large teachers meeting. Howard Winkleman moved to raise Stewart from 14 250 to 15 000 for 12 months per year, and the board approved.

At the Coos Bay Timber Inn on February 14 Myrtle Point pharmacists Don Schirmer and Duane Netland attended a seminar coordinated by Dean Freak C. Forslund of the School of Pharmacy. Speakers included Dr. Robert W. Sager and Gordon M. Smith. E.E. Hudson completed a Sewage Works Operators Short School at Oregon State University. The program aims to improve sewer operations and public health, with 134 operators enrolled statewide.
