A Washington column argues massive Belgian protests and a nationwide strike show a small cadre in labor unions and opposition parties steering national unrest. It contends the government did not coerce citizens but faced orchestrated pressure from subversives allied with major unions.
World War I Veterans gather Sunday February 19 at noon for a pot luck district meeting at the Legion Hall. District 9 includes Powers Myrtle Point Coquille Bandon Port Orford Gold Beach and Brookings with Ladies Auxiliary attending. Attendees should bring silverware and a dish. coffee cream and cups provided. Bert Pearson serves as Quartermaster.
The Elks Coquille Valley Lodge 1935 announces Bill Brocher and his Oregon Jazz Band will perform at the Elks Temple and Country Club in Norway on February 25 and 26. A $500 per couple weekend package applies, with all Teen-Agers free on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. Elks and guests are urged to attend this gala weekend of pleasure.
The writer returns from a 7,000 mile trip to find damp conditions and high water at Rink Creek causing one way traffic between here and Coquille. He notes no rain on the trip except in San Francisco and remarks on California’s historic dry spell. Continued on page 2.
Coos county plans to improve the Myrtle Point Arago road from Spruce Street bridge to the Arago Biring town junction. A new concrete bridge and 1506 feet of road realignment will be built under federal aid with Coos county funding 20 percent, the state 20 percent, and federal aid 60 percent. The project aims to reduce flood hazards that have stalled traffic and schoolchildren during past flood seasons.
A roster for the Shrine Grid Classic lists Jim Thomas of Myrtle Point as quarterback for the West, Don Peterson of Powers as center, and Desimés Schweitzer of Reedport as end. The event is set for Saturday in Pendleton with regional players featured in the West squad.
Flood waters blocked roads as Old Man Stork rode in with help. Gene Reed rowed his boat to aid, delivering a baby girl to Myrtle Point area mother and infant both reported well. Fire, mail, and bus services disrupted. schools closed as residents faced rising waters.
Weather observer Elmer Strode reports 9.97 inches of rain in Sitkum for the past week, the heaviest weekly total in five years. The period Feb 6 to Feb 12 shows daily totals with a peak 4.89 inches on Tuesday Feb 10, and a weekly total of 9.87 inches.
State Highway Commission announces relocation and construction of Highway 43 near Bridge. A public hearing is set for March 1 at 2 pm in Bridge grange hall. plans on display 9 to 11 am. Map sent to Coos County Court. Details to be explained at hearing.
Heart Sunday February 26 to be observed in Myrtle Point with volunteer workers contacting every home between four and six o'clock. The drive is led by Arian Lain ion Auxiliary Post No. 37 under Mrs. Pete Nemec with auxiliary members Jaycee Estes and Beta Sigma Phi assisting. Mrs. H. H. Thomas oversees collections at the basketball event.
The Band of Prayer plans a World Day of Prayer observance next Friday February 17 at 2 PM at the Presbyterian church. Mrs E C Barker chairs with help from Presbyterian Methodist Christian and Church of the Brethren members. A nursery will be provided. The service aims to unite in many languages as a national council of churches event reflecting a nuclear age era.
Rain washes out Myrtle Point's game with Ban don last week and Myrtle Point will be re scheduled. Cats must win at Gold Beach Friday to stay in title contention. U C E freshman to play here Saturday as Marshfield Sophs meet Myrtle Point JV, a perfect season so far.
According to Myrtle Point Rotary president Frank Weibke tickets are on sale for a Rotary club Musical at Myrtle Point High School Cafeteria Thursday March 2 starting at 8 pm. Proceeds support the club park program with admission 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students. Tickets available from any Rotary member.
The Lucas family of eight children lost their home on Catching Creek when a TV explosion reportedly sparked a fast moving blaze around 9 PM Monday. Don Davenport owned the house. neighbors housed the family that night and local residents began collecting aid for immediate needs.
A merchant promo states a 200 dollar prize for a winner present at 2 PM in participating stores. if the named winner is absent, the next drawing offers 900 dollars. The Sts Ann and Michael campaign seeks funds to construct a new convent and teaching space for Sisters, with Myrtle Point noted as a local center. County chafemen oversee the drive as planning continues.
The 1st annual Elks National Leadership contest results list Yokey and Joy Swenston of Bandon as top girl and runner up, Roger Sanders of Coquille winning boys, with Bruce Miller of Myrtle Point second. Coos Bay winners Linda Olsen and Fred Loffer get $150. Miller, son of Mr and Mrs Orvus Miller, is Myrtle Point High School senior and student leader. Judges included Ralph Mueller, Virgil Daniels, Charles, and Al Hall.
Coos Bay District of the Bureau of Land Management announced lease offerings for picking salal huckleberry brush fern and cescara bark for floral and rug markets. The office at 378 Park Ave Coos Bay will hold the sale at 10 30 am Friday February 24 1941. The openings aim to create employment opportunities in Coos and Douglas counties amid a rent lumber downturn.
