Ramblings LANS LENEVE recalls a staunch citizen known for outdoor love and calm nature. He hunted with family, enjoyed the mountains and streams, and accompanied by the woodsman’s life. He has been called beyond the last border of the big mountains.
Pictured are grand officers and honored guests at the Myrtle Point I O O F celebration marking the 56th birthday. The photo names C P Moore secretary August Beader and C C Carter among initiates from 86 years ago, with Ralph Fussell of Rossbury and Ed Carter attending as grand master and guest.
Red Cross report shows 261 county families aided in January with help from Myrtle Point volunteers Mrs H H Thomas and Mrs Frank Meldrum and others. Of those served 74 were military, 68 Navy Coast Guard and Marines, 71 veterans, 48 civilian families. Emergency messages totalled 147 to military or remote bases worldwide. Coos Bay area accounts for 86, Myrtle Point 41, Bandon 32, Coquille 31, North Bend and Charlestown area unspecified.
The Myrtle Hotel banquet room hosted about 60 Rotarians and guests for a two course chicken dinner. Earl Breuer led as president. Henry A Schroeder organized the entertainment with Ernest Clausen’s sons. Dr Robert A Lay provided piano solos and Rev Wilmer Briggs led a lively song fest. Continued on Page Two.
Myrtle Point I O F marks 50 years with a Wednesday night program led by District Deputy Grand Master George Hughes. He recounts lodge history from its 1901 dispensation by James W. Welch through its founding officers and early meetings on First and Fifth streets near Myrtle Hotel.
The Columbus Boy Choir arrives in Coos Bay February 19 under Coos County Concert association to audition boys aged nine to fourteen. Director Herbert Huffman will judge after the concert for those with musical aptitude and a good voice. Charles H. Ladd senior farm forester reports peak demand for farm timber in Willamette valley and western Oregon. A recent survey shows improved markets for sawlogs pulpwood poles piling and related products with current prices above prior levels. Forestry department offers free on the ground advice to woodland owners and urges contact with local representatives or write to the state forester in Salem.
The Willamette University Band of Salem Oregon will present a concert at a Point High school on Tuesday February 20 at 2 p m Maurice W Brennan director will conduct a program including Carnival of Venice Malaguena Syncopated Clock and other concert numbers and marches The event is sponsored by Myrtle Point Union High and Jubilee High.
A telephone note invites attendance as the county school superintendent explains legislation. The message emphasizes public interest and invites local boards to participate in the briefing.
Myrtle Point PTA at Junior High School honors Cub Scouts during a Tuesday meeting on February 6. Cub Scoutmaster Bramon introduces participants and discusses Scout projects. Four dens exist with den mothers Mrs. Darrell Brodie, Mrs. Ral Whitaker, Mrs. H. H Thomas, and Mrs. La Verne Noyes.
The Southwestern Oregon Future Farmers of America district convention met in Roseburg on February 10 with participants from Roseburg, Cottage Grove, Central Point, Junction City, Springfield, Myrtle Point and more. Highlights included a public speaking contest won by Vance Carlson and several first place ribbons for project books and welding. First place finishers advance to the state contest March 20, 1951 at Oregon State College in Corvallis.
