State Highway Department built miles of four lane highway around the area but left the Myrtle Point to Grays Creek segment unfinished. The hazardous bottleneck needs immediate action to correct the safety risk.
Oregon residents report slow progress on Highway 42 from Winston to Bridge. They note millions spent annually on highway upgrades elsewhere while this bottleneck remains underfunded. Citizens, including local groups, push for a satisfactorily completed project.
Local officials report a narrow 19 foot 2 inch North Fork Bridge with no signs for icy or wet conditions. Traffic counts show 3 400 vehicles daily on the North Fork corridor. 200 log trucks and 100 chip trucks cross the bridge daily, with delays when two heavy vehicles meet. Residents push for completion of the highway to Coquille and Myrtle Point, with warnings and a white line proposed to guide motorists until a permanent fix.
Nearly 20 residents urged the city council to approve a sanitary sewer plan in the East Maryland Avenue area. The project, initiated by state and county health departments as hazardous, is estimated at 14900 dollars with each home charged 550 dollars. The city would subsidize 5000 dollars. Bancroft Bonding Act may allow 10 years to pay at 6 percent interest.
A Saturday night collision on Gravelford Road near Barsee Place left the driver uninjured while passenger Mike Metsgus sustained minor facial injuries. The car rolled onto an embankment and into Myrtle trees before Clement Wrecking Service towed it away.

Mr. Gordon MacKenoy owner of Mac's A and W underwent his second open heart surgery at St Vincent's Hospital in Portland on February 1 and is reportedly recovering well. The A and W store has been closed since January 1, 1968 and will remain closed until March 1.
Aiman L. Moxon, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon W. Moxon of Powers, serves with the Pacific Air Forces at Takhl Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. An electronic equipment repairman, he previously was assigned to Nellis AFB Nevada after graduating from Powers High School and attending Southern Oregon College and Oregon State University.
World famed drummer Joe Morello will appear February 15 at 8 00 p m in Myrtle Crest Gym Myrtle Point as part of a four major area education concert. Ludwig sponsors the event with tickets from band students at 2 00 per family 1 00 per adult and 8 50 per student. He will discuss drum solo evolution rhythm and stage band fundamentals during the performance and education segment.
Local court reports list multiple defendants with petty larceny breach and assault charges. Bail forfeitures range from 15 to 100 dollars, plus several cases for excessive noise and disorderly conduct with fines noted.
