U S Senator Bob Packwood will speak at Myrtle Point High School on Tuesday at 1 30 p m as part of a Coos County listening tour. He will also attend a Tuesday noon meeting of the Coquille Chamber of Commerce in a second stop.
Southwestern Oregon Community College directors approve a 31 million budget for 1914-78 including a 3,907,980 general fund, 1,037,780 local tax levy, and 980,000 in equipment purchases. The plan raises local revenues by 966,000 and stays within a 6 percent growth cap.
Joan Churchill, a Coquille Valley native and Coquille High School graduate, has joined Security Bank of Coos County in Myrtle Point as loan officer. She moved from Pasco Washington where she managed a Pacific Finance office for three years and was active in Kiwanis and local groups.
The State Board adopts new graduation standards to affect the Class of 1978 starting with the Freshman Class of 1974. Requirements cover three subjects in communication, math, science, social studies, physical education, health, personal finance, citizenship and career education plus electives to 21 units. Limited classroom space prompts bond issue on Feb 19 to fund more rooms or temporary facilities. Parents and students urged to review competency and subject requirements for diploma.
District Judge Charles H. Reeves announced his candidacy for re election to the post he has held since his 1967 appointment by Gov. McCall. The non partisan six year term covers a busy Oregon court career with traffic reform work and ABA involvement. He has served as pro tem in Coos County and in Douglas Curry and Multnomah counties. He is a Linfield College alum and earned a law degree from the University of Oregon and Willamette University. He also attended the National College of State Trial Judges in 1969.
Miss Isabel L Fisk of Maine Michigan joins the Timber Management Section at Powers. She earned a forestry degree in 1973 from Midela State University and worked at the Powers District as forester before moving to small timber sales. Bernard J Altenbach promoted from Olympic National Forest to Powers as Planning and Other Resources Assistant. He previously served in the Army and worked at Frenont and Rogue River national forests with a family of four.
Public notices list Myrtle Point City Council meetings on the first and third Mondays at 7 30 p m in council chambers. The Port of Coquille River Commission meets third Tuesday monthly at 7 30 p m. Myrtle Point School District 41 Board meets second and fourth Mondays at 8 p m. City Planning Commission meets second Monday monthly at 7 30 p m in city hall. Myrtle Point City Library Board meets Tuesday before the last Friday of each month at 4 p m. Flore M Laird Memorial Library is located at Fifth and Willow streets.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce endorsed a 560 000 bond for a new addition at Myrtle Point High School to be voted February 19. District 41 Supt Joe Stewart warned the district faces serious trouble without upgrading the sub standard high school. Budget chairman Bob Hogan announced a February 25 budget hearing and a March 26 election. The chamber also approved a 1965 budget for the current year.
Bill Maddy of Albany describes his five month stay with German families under the International Four-H Youth Exchange program. He details rural tasks such as pruning Douglas firs, visiting the Berlin Wall, and hand harvesting potatoes. He will speak to Coos County students and at the Coquille extension office on February 8.
