In Jasper Georgia a Collie puppy named Butch is hit by a neighbor's car and dies. His 93 year old owner Andy Wallace buries him after a merciful shot. Weeks later the boy and father are surprised when Butch scratches at the door alive, restoring faith and hope.
Pacific Power and Light announced it has hired J. W. Woomer & Associates to estimate mining costs for Eden Ridge coal. Preliminary tests indicate the coal is suitable for a power plant boiler, with data suggesting enough supply for at least one 100000 kilowatt unit.
Jack Dunn and his wife Mrs. Dunn will move to Portland to join Maguire Shields Morrison Bailey by March 1. Dunn has served Myrtle Point as mayor, city attorney, councilman, and in various community roles, including on the State Bar Examiners. Their children Edward and Edithann will finish the school year in Myrtle Point. The Herald extends best wishes.

A Friday afternoon blaze of unknown origin completely consumed the D. L. Giles residence on Big Creek near Bridge. The family of ten, including eight children, lost their home and possessions with minimal insurance coverage. relief came through local welfare supervisor Mrs. J H Olinger and community donations.
Local extension staff report 19 informal discussion groups with 195 participants in Coos County. The eight week program began January 20 to inform public opinion on foreign policy issues. The State Highway Commission will start work to eliminate the dangerous curve at Powers Junction on Highway 42 after confirmation from Coos County Chamber of Commerce leaders. Engineering reports urged improvements and the commission will carry out the project as requested by local business groups.
The Coos Bay Times article claimed Myrtle Point youths formed organized gangs. Police Chief Tankersley says that label is false, acknowledging only a small group of youths rounded up and sent to juvenile court.

The Myrtle Point Baptist church hosts a regional round robin with several area churches next week. Dr. Lee Lovegren, a Conservative Baptist Foreign Missionary Society worker held by Chinese Communists, speaks tonight. Friday features Miss Jeger and Sunday services begin February 11 at 7:96.
