School District 41 teachers and classified employees reached bargaining milestones at a board meeting. Classified staff secured a 6 percent cost of living raise and a yearly salary increment, with two of three requested items granted. Teachers gained new starting salaries and scale raises with added benefits.
The obituary profiles Walter I. Barklow Sr. born February 26 1896 in Myrtle Point. A pioneer in Coos County he logged built roads and bridges helped construct the Myrtle Point to Powers railroad and served nine years as county commissioner. He loved the woods woodcraft Myrtlewood novelties and chaired the Coos Curry Pioneer and Historical Association.
The City of Myrtle Point received 15487.64 from the semiannual apportionment of the State Highway Fund announced by the Oregon State Highway Commission. Total funding to be distributed to 226 incorporated Oregon cities amounts to 96307 377.84, based on a 12 percent statutory share for July 1 to December 31, 1968, drawn from motor vehicle fees fuel taxes and highway penalties collected by weightmasters.

The 1969 Heart Fund Drive reaches its peak with Heart Sunday Week February 16 23 as district captains lead volunteers in a house to house canvass of Myrtle Point. Statewide more than 300 drives run with about 3 000 volunteers. Contact Mrs Powrie to volunteer.
February 17 the first Budget Meeting for School District 41 will be held in the Myrtle Point High School Library at 7:00 p.m. Superintendent Jos H. Stewart, budget officer, will present the budget message. Public meeting for patrons to make requests and ask questions. Copies of the budget document will be available.
The Coos County courthouse reminds dog owners to purchase licenses this month with a 98.00 penalty after February 28. Georgia-Pacific announces five new plants to be built in Coos Bay Oregon Mississippi South Carolina and Georgia costing about 980 million dollars and becoming active in 19. The Coos Bay site will produce particle board with large annual capacity and substantial investment.
Snow and fallen trees cripple Cool-Curry Cooperative's effort to restore electric service in outlying areas. Bill Cook, general manager, says Gravelford McKinley and Daniels Creek remain problematic while major lines are back in service on a single phase. An aerial survey targets Gravelford with plans to survey Sampa Cree Fat Elk and Riverton by Sunday night.
After a week of outages from the worst Coos County storm, Pacific Power and Light reports 90 workers and 30 trucks combated downed lines and snow. Crews from Willamette Valley aided, with service returning gradually to Coquille Myrtle Point and Coos Bay areas by week’s end.
The Farmers Home Administration offers low interest emergency loans to Douglas and Coos County farmers and rural homeowners hit by the recent snow storm. Loans cover repair or replacement of buildings machinery livestock and other necessary expenses. Applications are coordinated through the County Agent's Office between 1 and 3 p.m.
The Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division of the IRS requires guns dealers to obtain federal licenses, with a $10 fee. License allows selling firearms other than destruction devices. Oregon’s A G Erickson notes many will need licenses for first time. Dealers may sell ammunition while applications are processed. Ammunition sales restricted by buyer age 18 for shotgun or rifle and 21 for pistols. Dealers must maintain purchase and sale records detailing ammunition type, quantity, purchaser name, address, age, and ID method. Records may be kept for inspection. purchases under 18 may be furnished to events. Interstate sales remain restricted but ammunition can be bought from other states.
Red Cross announces a volunteers’ recognition meeting February 7 at 10 30 am at the Community building in Chilalie. The event honors donors and workers who served in the relief efforts and community aid programs.
