Ernest Clausen retires after 25 years as a director of Security Bank of Coos County. At the December meeting he tendered resignation to board president Sam Dement. board and stockholders note gratitude for his devoted service and record the action in minutes.
The annual Heart Fund drive will begin shortly after February 1 with Mrs. Kenneth Galloway as general chairman. Mel Zumwalt is named business chairman for Myrtle Point and will visit local businesses for contributions. The Styr tle Point High School National Honor Society plans the Heart Sunday canvass on February 25.
Oregon courts reported nearly 370 000 traffic violation convictions to the Motor Vehicles Division in 1972, a six percent rise from 1971. Driving under the influence convictions reached 10 847, the highest in state history, with corresponding license suspensions totaling almost 50 000.
Myrtle Point resident LaVerne Brodie receives the Women of Achievement honor from Delta Kappa Gamma for Red Cross volunteer work with military hospitals and disaster relief. She serves on regional boards, county welfare advisory panels, and community committees. The ceremony is February 3 at North Bend’s Pony Village Motor Lodge with speaker Bertha Holt.
The Association for Children with Learning Disabilities ACLD elected Gavin Warren president Sary Headry vice president Kay Hughlett secretary Molly Westling treasurer Jean Whitaker librarian and historian Barbara Piercy Barbara Davis and Betty Warren publicity.
UCLA researchers select the Coos Curry program among 50 nationwide outstanding youth initiatives. The project led by Palner Anderson and city officials charts Coos Bay waste disposal and promotes an environmental project It Started in the Classroom. A public film at Coos Bay City Hall has drawn national praise.
Sawdusters announce auditions at the Sawdust Theatre Coquille on Sunday February 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. and February 7 at 7 p.m. Open to men and women 16 and older with no experience required. Two one act melodramas to be performed each Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day with directors Joan Berry Pete Case and Dorothy Ley Cathy Smith assisting.
Tosca Means new Coos County volunteer coordinator seeks a permanent driver pool as most communities lack buses. Gas money and insurance can be provided. the county welfare office in Coos Bay hosts Volunteer Services with duties ranging from transport to visiting isolated seniors, sewing, clerical work, and helping with forms. Call weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to join.
The Myrtle Point Lions Club meets February 7 at the Coquille Valley Elks Club with dinner at 7 30 p m. Past presidents and founders are invited plus Oregon’s first Lions District Governor. Guest speaker is International Firestor Al Flene Mews.
