Women Join Powers Fire Department as Volunteers

Susie Barrows and Margie Xzi0 train and fight fires with the Powers volunteer unit alongside men. Chief Pete Peterson encouraged women after daytime gaps when men are away, noting several women now serve in firefighting and ambulance roles. They receive small stipends per meeting and fire call, with funds aiding equipment. Susie recalls first experiences in a flue fire and grass fires, proving women can contribute regardless of gender.

Outreach meeting set for SWOCC program

An organizational meeting for the Southwestern Oregon Community College Outreach program is planned for Thursday January 13 at 7 30 p m at Myrtle Crest School. Don Strahan will present the project aims and methods and seek public input to tailor classes to local needs. The program focuses on adults with limited access to education seeking new skills or personal enrichment.

McKean-Smith Plans January Painting Exhibit

McKean-Smith, a longtime art center organizer, heads a retrospective show at Coquille Valley Art Center near Myrtle Point opening the first Tuesday in January 1977. She notes her works span watercolors pastel drawings and evolving compositions. The center, on Highway 42, welcomes visitors daily 1 to 4 except Mondays.

Painting classes begin at Coquille Valley Art Center

Winter term paintings start Tuesday January 4 with an advanced class 10 am to 3 pm taught by Vicki McKean-Smith. January 5 offers beginners and continuation of fall term 10 am to 3 pm and an evening session 7 to 10 pm for all levels. Betty Hammond leads an advanced oil painting class January 5. Registration at opening day. Tuition is 20 dollars per 10 lesson term plus 12 dollar annual center membership.
