A wooden frame house at Harris Street and Avenue burned Monday after police spotted smoke. Myrtle Point Fire Department fought the blaze for about four hours, starting in a downstairs living room and reaching a third floor attic. The Wayne Phillips family escaped unharmed but lost most belongings.
The family stated their gratitude for clothing and household items donated by the community. Four and six year old children helped by contributing and expressing appreciation, with support echoed by family members including their son Danny.
Joan Neal Gearhart 91, longtime Southern Coos County resident, died Tuesday at his Dora farm home. Born December 2, 1880 in Astoria, he settled in Dora in 1907 and studied at Oregon Agricultural College. He held multiple public roles including deputy county surveyor, city engineer of Coquille, School District clerk, and chair of the Row High School Board. He helped found regional engineering groups and remained a life member of professional engineers societies. Funeral services will follow.
District winners of the Ben evolset and Protective Order of Fikes Youth Leadership Contest were announced by Dave Pinkerton of the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge. Michael Erle Hoef fel of Coquille and Debra Suzanne Abel of Myrtle Point earned first place in boys and girls divisions, with Rhonda Joy De Main and Gary Orchard as runners-up. First place prizes include a 100 dollar Savings Bond and second place 60 dollar bonds.
Bank debits for Coos County in November 1971 reached 968 million dollars, up 21.0 percent from November 1970. Oregon, with 368 banks, posted an 18.6 percent month to month gain from October 1971 to November 1971, and a 21 percent year over year rise.
