Residents urge 1962 plans for Myrtle Point include uniform sidewalk marquees and covered walkways, plus a one way parking scheme to revitalize the business district. They advocate courthouse style design, street reconfigurations, and a potential Myrtle Crest school strategy to guide long term growth.
Superintendent Hubert Armstrong outlined Myrtle Point's budget needs with 1000 students across 8 schools. He highlighted tax base rank, classroom diversity, and demands for updated maps, foreign language labs, special education staff, a school nurse, and junior high program planning.
Guido Caldarazzo’s Myrtle Point team beats A-1 North Bend 27 24 with Dick Pallin pinning at 115 pounds and Bil Brodie edging John Caruso in the 148 class. Kincheloe wins by default in unlimited after an ankle sprain. Other winners include Winningham, Pallis, Dickey, Brodle, Lange, and Kincheloe.

Myrtle Point merchants said the Christmas business was the best in years with record crowds Friday and Saturday. Lou Durham of Durham's Variety reported sales far above forecasts, while grocers saw stable or modest gains and gift stores benefited from improved local economic conditions. Coquille, by contrast, experienced noticeably weaker activity. overall, Myrtle Point enjoyed a very generous mid abundant Christmas season and a sunny Christmas Day.
A $500 Stop-Shop Five drawing will name five winners at 2 p.m. Saturday. Each present winner will receive $100 in participating merchants' stores. On the 16th only one participant was present when the $500 jackpot was drawn.
Leroy Robinson has passed the state Real Estate Brokers exam held December 11 in Portland. He takes over the former Myrtle Realty this week, operating it as Realty. W A Roberts remains as salesman in the newly renamed office, Myrtle Realty.
Scoutmaster Melvin Floyd announces Boy Scouts will pick up Christmas trees citywide on the 31st for 10 cents each. Funds raised will aid troop expenses.
With the scheduled program canceled by flu the Myrtle Point Rotary improvised a do it yourself event featuring Ruth Michele siding organ music Christmas carols and Rev. Glen Mayhew telling humorous anecdotes. Mrs Ron Endicott joined with organ pieces and Mrs Mayhew offered a Christmas reading. A Myrtlewood planter crafted by Jack Davis, featuring a small Myrtle tree, will travel to the Century-41 Seattle World Fair for display.
4-H leaders invite all interested in 4-H activities to Broadbent Grange for an achievement night Friday.
Roy Pennington won the grand prize of 75 in the merchants drawing at the Hiland Theatre on Saturday night. A West Virginia native living at Moore Apartments, he works for Georgia-Pacific Plywood and moved here about two years ago. He arrived with merchant tickets from Moore Apartments residents and carried few of his own.
