Gasoline Spill After Truck Upset on Highway 42
A large oil trailer overturned on Highway 42 near Powers causing about 4600 gallons of gasoline to spill onto the road and down the hill toward the Coquille River. The driver’s name and condition were unavailable at press time. The rig belonged to Ash Bay Truck Lines and was tied to Shell Oil.

Walter Sykes a Pow ers logger and proprietor of Sykes Logging Co died Friday afternoon at Mass hospital after a heart attack. He was 67 and long a resident known for logging work and local baseball. Survived by widow Mrs Pear Sykes of Albany two Eureka California daughters one grandson two step sons Gene and Claude Pressler. Funeral Monday at Scarpeder Funeral home then to Eugene for burial. The Myrtle Point Parent Teachers Association held a Tuesday evening program by 4th to 8th grade pupils featuring Christmas music directed by Mrs. Harry Mason and Arnold Belby. A $10 package of English with Spanish translated children’s books was sent to the Benjamin Franklin Library in Mexico City, with photos to be sold to fund more library pictures. The next meeting on January 8 will include open house, department displays, and an art exhibit. Refreshments were provided by a committee of mothers led by Mrs. Wm Axe.
