Coos county Red Cross announces a county wide war relief drive to reach a 50 million national quota, with Myrtle Point organizing a committee led by L H Pearce. Funds from local contributions support armed forces aid and expanded Red Cross services, with mail outreach instead of door to door solicitation.
A four member deputation team from La Verne College La Verne California will appear at the Church of The Brethren Saturday evening at 7 30 presenting music and readings The group includes Frank D Howell Mary Ellen Kininer David Young and Terry DeBeal Their prior Myrtle Point appearances drew appreciative audiences and the program is described as high order.
Harry Christy, longtime manager of the Safeway store at Myrtle Point for 14 years, announced his retirement and purchase of a grocery store in Pendleton. He will leave this Sunday and assume ownership on New Year’s Day, with Mrs Christy and Barton and Nole Ray remaining through spring. The Pendleton store at Main Street is described as modern in eastern Oregon’s growing city of about 7,000.
About 65 000 people visited the Siskiyou National Forest in 1941, up 3 percent from 1940. Recreation included camping 11008 picnicking 1990 fishing 24000 swimming 600 and sight seeing 24000 with most visitors in the California section via the Redwood highway.
Myrtle Point high school faculty will miss the holidays out of town and return for classes January 4. Several staff members visit relatives in Eugene Bend Springfield Corvallis Newberg Pocatello Idaho and with family in Eugene and Portland during Christmas.
Oregon farmers pledge to surpass 1942 war production goals for milk eggs pork and beef as war demand rises. State UBDA chairman Cbert B. Taylor reports signups exceed targets with gains across cows milked, hogs, beef cattle, and crops while extension service coordinates educational support for wartime production.
W L Bell reports one hundred dollar defense bond purchased Tuesday by the Myrtle Point Bucks, an independent athletic group. The bond is payable to the Bucks or, if disbanded, to the Myrtle Point Union High Lity athletic association. Phyllis Belloni, University of Oregon student, arrived home last Friday to spend the holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs John Belloni.
The Myrtle Lions Club held its annual Christmas gift exchange Monday evening at the Myrtle Hotel dining room with large attendance. Entertainment included songs by Henry Schroeder and Werry Mankin, piano by Stanley Phillips, and a talk on The Significance of Christmas by Arthur R. Jones. Mrs Norwood Browne and helpers catered a plentiful turkey dinner followed by gift exchanges. E C Roberts, club president, presided.
Mr and Mrs D R Case welcomed a son Sammie Dee born last Saturday December 20. Fern LaFlamme had a tonsillectomy. Norman Chenoweth and Cyril Deffering treated for injuries at local logging and contracting works. Adrian Ward and several others treated for rib and related injuries. Hospital admissions included several patients from Myrtle Point Powers Coquille and Norway. Dismissals included Truman Hartley and others from Broadbent Myrtle Point and nearby towns.
A weather column notes Warren Deyoe left Benday to visit daughter Mrs Ellis Warr ner in Ontario and was suddenly recalled home by the death of her daughter Mrs Bruce Henry last Friday afternoon.
The first meeting of the Shuttle Point Woman's 4, SOPs drew sixteen attendees led by organiser Jacqueline Bond. Twenty five? No, sixteen women joined the unit with training to start that night under Dr H H Thomas. Roy Miller will teach first aid and Bert Person drill master. A $100 fee is charged for joining.
Jo Woolsey left last Friday for Hood River to join the Sun weekly newspaper after 14 months with Herald Press. Mrs Zola Miller will take her advertising role and Miss Shirlee Miller becomes social and news reporter.
A conference at Oregon State College heard 10 AAA committeemen say town and rural papers remain the best farm news medium. They urged close ties between agricultural program leaders and local editors for prompt accurate local farm reports and wider rural reach.
