A reader essay urges caring for underprivileged local youths by gifting used fishing tackle. The author recalls a recent act of charity: supplying a boy with a complete casting outfit, prompting grateful responses from both the boy and his father. The Coquille Veterans of Foreign Wars held a banquet at St Marks Episcopal Church to honor Ralph Steller, editor of the town paper, for his VFW related publicity and a nationally notable editorial on Respect to the Flag. G C Pike presented a framed citation from the National Commander and praised Steller in remarks on VFW goals. Steller expressed humility and attributed the honor to duty as a newspaper man.
The ceremony installed officers before some 100 attendees who adjourned to a decorated dining room. Mrs Elden Brodie crafted cerise and silver tables with revolving angel centerpiece, pink candles and a large punch bowl. Mr Kilgore cut the cake for his birthday as others served refreshments and coffee. A reception followed at Myrtle Hotel for Mr and Mrs Robert Fielding of Portland, parents of Mrs Culler, the newly installed worthy matron. Continued on Page Eight.
Elton Schroeder of Myrtle Point was unanimously elected president of the Coos County Chamber of Commerce at a board meeting in Coos Bay. Other officers named include Eric Laukkonen as vice president John Burles as treasurer and Frank Calise as secretary. Installation is set for January with officers taking over immediately.
Pacific Power and Light will air The Story of the Nativity on KWRO Friday at 8 p.m. for the 20th year. Bru Netta Mazzolini and Dean Lieber headline a program of choral singing and orchestral music, presented in reverent narration.
Catching Creek pastor Rev O E Marsters will occupy the pulpit at the First Methodist Church in Myrtle Point Sunday morning December 22 in Rev Edn McClurg's absence. Catching Creek services are canceled to allow members to attend the Myrtle Point service.
In 1818 a broken organ at St Nicholas Church in a tiny Austrian village led organist Franz Gruber to compose a guitar friendly melody after parish priest Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics. The next day Gruber set Mohr's words to music and the carol was born.
Local feature showcases Spenny Ross’s Henry Schroeder window exhibit with electric trains moving on 80 feet of track. Remote controlled passenger and stock trains traverse bridges tunnels and signals while loading unloading and even watering at stations. The display promises weeklong entertainment for families and curious onlookers.
Joanne Darlene Lett, daughter of Mr and Mrs Orlin Lett Broadhead, sings with La Verne College Capella Choir as they perform Bach Magnificat in the La Verne College Chapel and Sunday evening program. The piece, written for Leipzig Christmas Vespers in 1723, showcases Bach's choral style and Marys emotions.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce named three grand prize winners in its Buy at Home contest. Mrs. Noman Jarvis won 50 in certificates, Mrs. Kay Petersen 25, and Mrs. Lewis Shindell 15. Final week prizes of 10 and 5 went to Mrs. J. B. Barkdoll and Mrs. Glenn Barrows. The winners’ letters urged shopping locally to boost town prosperity.
Miss Lathan Farley reports receiving 406471 81 in checks from the superintendent of public instruction Salem via the Basic School Support Fund. Checks go out three times yearly, covering about one third of the fund, with largest payments to Coquille Coos Bay North Bend Myrtle Point Bandon and Myrtle Point schools.
The dedication of St Mark's Episcopal Church in Myrtle Point was led by Bishop Benjamin Dagwell with about 100 attendees including Powers and Coquille groups. The rustic exterior and Philippine mahogany interior were prepared by Jack F Dunn and Austin Dodge.
The First Presbyterian congregation will hear Rev Richard Kellogg supply the pulpit this Sunday in place of the absent pastor Rev Theodore Smith. The Kelloggs will spend Christmas with their daughter Mrs Paul Grout but expect to return for the next Sunday service. The invitation welcomes all to attend.
