Mel Zumwalt, Bank of Myrtle Point manager, was elected president of the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce for 1975 at the 1974 dinner meeting at Loy's Myrtle Point Restaurant. Jim Chapel and Jim Myers were named first and second vice presidents, Milton Schroeder treasurer, and Shirley Francis secretary.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce sponsors annual prize drawings this Saturday in front of Roush Parts and Service on Spruce Street. Three drawings occur at 11 am 2 pm and 4 pm with prizes including a microwave oven two gift certificates and many small items donated by local merchants and businesses. Radio KWRO will announce winning numbers and prize claims must be made by the next drawing.
The Myrtle Point Police report burglars broke a locked door on Saturday night or Sunday morning at Weird Harold's Hog Shop, 703 Eighth St. A mini bike was stolen and detectives pursue several leads. Police Chief Ed Summers said it was the town's first major burglary in some time.
Myrtle Point schedules public meetings for the City Council School Board and Planning Commission with regular sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays at city hall and the library. The council voted to send a letter to the Corps of Engineers backing deepening Coos Bay entrance after cargo tonnage exceeded 2020 projections. A chamber event will discuss a logging and lumbering museum proposal.
Myrtle Point City Council hired Huckins to replace Mrs Shields as city recorder effective January 1 after a year of training under Shields. Shields will retire January 1 1975 after a formal resignation accepted at the meeting. Council also approved a supplemental budget for federal Tithe 1 CETA funds and the Myrtle Point Day Care Center, opened bids on furnace oil with a low bid of 34 cents per gallon from Bob McGeary, Sheil Jobber. A 1 PM Hiland Theatre movie for the Lions Christmas party features Santa Claus visiting the theater with candy for attending children.
Patricia Ramirez Salazar, a 14 year old Costa Rican freshman from San Jose, is staying with the Brummels in Myrtle Point as part of a two month Alliance for Progress exchange placing 30 Costa Rican students in Oregon high schools. She attends MPHS this month and will move to a Portland high school next month. Patricia plans to study pharmacy at the University of Costa Rica after graduation and has four brothers. She has not seen snow before but will likely see it this weekend at Diamond Lake.
Edward Alfred Burghart, 63, of 512 24h St. Myrtle Point, was killed instantly early Monday when his pickup struck PPLs main transmission pole at 23rd and Maple. Police say the vehicle was about 60 mph. Burghart was alone. It was the city's first fatal traffic crash in years. THIS CHRISTMAS SHOP AT HOME.
Local chamber discussions on using the former FFA dormitory at the fairgrounds as a museum site. If approved, Coos County Fair Board and chamber groups would staff it during the Aug fair. Verlin Hermann, Cart ckham, and Bud Bick named to a staging museum committee.
Ben Daniels of the chamber reports that the Santa Claus figure gave away 48 dozen candy canes to local children across two Saturdays in front of the Security Bank building.
