Two North Bend men who recently escaped punishment in Coquille for assaulting Dale Gault and James Ninthy were sentenced to long terms in Salem. They were escorted by officers to the penitentiary and filed past crowds along the way. The piece notes a prior appeal and highlights community support for disabled veterans in Roseburg, with 105 toys collected for the hospital program.
A teenage angler struggled with a steelhead tangled in brush along the river. The fish resisted efforts to free it as the boy attempted to reel in the catch and ended up guiding the boat back to the bank.

Regional administrator Daniel L Goldy says the plan provides advance knowledge of tracts to be offered, replacing the single-applicant sales method and aiding prospective bidders and operators.
On Sunday December 18 the First Presbyterian Church offers two Christmas programs, morning and evening. The 7 pm service accommodates small children and follows a candle lighted pageant titled Once Upon a Christmas Time featuring a mother and her children on the Nativity scene with special lighting.
The First Christian church presents Bethlehem Town a Christmas pantomime on Tuesday evening December 20 at 8 o clock. Directors include Mrs J T Royer Mrs T J Rhoades and Miss Florence Russell.

Listed parents include Donald Catbtos Broadbent, Harry Fo Metarths, Kenneth KR Yager, Revert Lunes, Padphot Chappel, and Melvin Beant with birth dates in December 1940 and 1949.
The Myrtle Point Powers Lions clubs steelhead derby reports strong action in Coos County with 21 fish weighed during the first week. Harry Collier of Arago won prize No 1 a 12 lb 14 oz electric blanket. Martin Helvey of Myrtle Point claimed second prize a pair of sportsman hip boots. Gale Barrows of Myrtle Point took third a 4% foot casting rod. Further weigh-ins continued at Powers with Irvin Wil announcing another station.
Rev and Mrs John Parrish of Northwest Christian College Eugene have been called to lead the First Christian church of Myrtle Point. They have been in town five weeks and the congregation voted to extend the call after hearing Parrish's sermons. Parrish is a college graduate.
Seven private forest holdings in western Oregon and Washington totaling 254 617 acres join West Coast Tree Farms, pushing Douglas fir region total to 3 270 682 acres. E P Stamm notes substantial forward step for timber supplies and tax rolls as new farms include Peter Glenn Tree Farm in Columbia County and Millacoma Forest Coos and Douglas counties.
The annual Community Christmas program at Union High School will be held Tuesday evening. Rev Wilmer A Briggs will preside. The 8 00 schedule includes High School band singing Christmas Carols and special numbers by the Girls Glee Club Noel Quartet and church choirs. The program will feature a Christmas Story performed by the music department with local church cooperation.
Mrs. Rauch notes 900 Christmas Seal letters failed to meet expectations as only 484.38 has been raised so far from post office and Security Bank booths. Rainbow Girls will run booths again Saturday with Myrtle Wilson in charge as local club members sponsor the sale to fight tuberculosis.
The Herald invites churches to submit Christmas programs for front page publication. Programs must reach The Herald office before Monday noon to allow set and correction time.
University of Oregon freshman coach Bill Bowerman spoke to the Myrtle Point Lions club dinner honoring the Myrtle Point high school Bobcats, urging athletes to value a college education and pursue goals with initiative. He illustrated with a tale about prayer and action, and answered many questions from students.
The Methodist church choir presents a musical program on Thursday December 22 at the church. The performance features selected hymns and new pieces, inviting the community to attend.
Myrtle Point Fire Department members decorated the hilltop Christmas tree townwide. William Gage of Harmony Mills furnished a truck and crew to cut 125 trees for placement by Bert Pearson with help from Harry Porter and Matthew Nichols. Firemen Marlin Evans Fred Mantz Mitch Myers Ritchie Francis Milton Craven Joe DeMarch Olaf Idleman Pearl Moore and Milton Schroeder assisted with lights and tree placement. The Herald thanks the community for their commendable spirit.
The Superior Cheese Co affiliated with Safeway Stores, Inc announces a new cheese plant in Myrtle Point Coos County. The facility will feature high speed milk handling and 5 000 gallon tanks replacing open tanks and aims to produce 2 ¾ to 3 million pounds of cheese in 1950. Concrete construction with glass brick windows and tiled processing rooms will be used. Continued back page 2nd section.
Myrtle Point Bobcats remain undefeated by edging Ashland Grizzlies 38 to 36 at the high school gym. The game stayed within one or two points until the final quarter with Myrtle Point taking the slim lead in the second half. Rick Bingham hit a free throw at the buzzer for a 21-20 halftime edge.
Myrtle Point Bobcats topped Pirates 18 4 and Devils 12 11 in one quarter apiece at a North Bend jamboree. Coos Bay Times notes Myrtle Point appears the strongest, though lineups were shuffled and scores varied across teams. North Bend finished 34 21, Marshfield 33 37, Coquille 24 39.
Bobcats defeat Rogue River Christians 48 to 41 as Marv Hammack scores 22 points and Rick Bingham adds eight. Parker leads visitors with 15 while Bobcats escape with early leads 10-5 and 28-15 at halftime.
