Myrtle Point Chamber to Host Christmas Merchandise Give-Away

The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce plans a Saturday merchandise give-away starting at 10 a.m. in front of the Hyland Theatre. Tickets drawn at intervals will determine prizes including a 10-speed bicycle and more. Lions Club Christmas Party follows at 1 p.m. with a free movie and Santa Claus appearance.

Counties seek grant for regional solid waste planning

Coos and Curry counties plan to apply for a $47,000 Department of Environmental Quality grant to fund a six month solid waste disposal plan covering collection disposal and recycling for the two county area. The plan will be overseen by a joint county commission council with input from wood products industry sanitation reps and area cities. The effort aims to curb waste problems by year end 1973 amid coastal terrain and industry challenges. Four Coquille Valley residents won $50 savings accounts at the Bank of Myrtle Point grand opening. Bank manager McZunwalt said crowds attended. Local children may call Santa Sunday 6 to 8 pm at 678 8418 in Myrtle Point. A Christmas observance is set for 6 pm Sunday Dec 17 at the Masonic Lodge Mall in Myrtle Point with all masons invited.

Roseburg Man Dies After Prolonged Freeze Trek

A Roseburg man perished after walking 5.5 miles through a frigid area when his vehicle became stuck and power failed. His body was found by two hunters, with sheriff officials noting the incident occurred in early December.

Severe Cold Weather Grips Myrtle Point Area

A week of frigid conditions brought sub ten degree lows with a nine degree record and ice covered roads. Snow fell Tuesday and Wednesday and many homes saw frozen pipes while schools reopened after closures. Ice across the Coquille River affected several locations as lumber mills cut operations.

Elementary pupils benefit from SWOCC tutoring program

Southwestern Oregon Community College District students tutor local elementary pupils during school hours. Fourteen college tutors in Education 207 and 209 meet weekly for seminars and tutor at least four hours weekly in language arts and mathematics. Over 78 students receive help this term.

Community bus schedules for two routes and notes
