A letter from Ben Burman editor of the Gra Bulletin recalls a 20 year old Clackamag river fishing trip. A short legged companion crawled under a log and startled by a warm fur touch then screamed, as the cougar lurked nearby, prompting a quick rescue.
The Methodist church choir will present its annual Christmas Cantata next Sunday evening at 8 o’clock under director Mrs. Ray Harrie. The program features sacred works by Fred B. Heston including Prepare Ye the Way and The Song Is Peaceful, with a full chorus and several solos. A reception for the choir will follow in the church basement. all are invited.
Grade school children will perform Christmas carols at the PTA meeting next Tuesday evening. The program includes old and new carols with music from the Junior and Senior Schools. Refreshments will follow, hosted by the PTA committee chaired by William Axe. No executive board meeting this month due to holidays. The school census totals 1,039 children aged 4 to 20 in the district. anyone missing a child should notify Superintendent Paul Franzen.
Fifty years ago Roosevelt faced a major Post Office Department scandal tied to McKinley and Harrison appointees. Bristow uncovered bribes and graft, leading to arrests and dismissals as Roosevelt pressed for full accountability and purged corruption despite party pressure.
Advertisements announce Santa Claus will visit Myers and Myers in Myrtle Point and Western Auto Stores next Saturday. He will be at Myers from 11:30 to 12:13 and at Western Auto from 12:18 to 1. Children under 12 with a parent receive a gift from Santa.
The First Presbyterian Church schedules a children's Christmas service next Sunday at 7 00 pm titled Christmas Joys with recitations and film strip pictures. The Sunday School will perform with all students involved. The church choir will sing The Birthday of a King and Gesu Bambino, and the pastor will deliver a talk on The Babe in a Manger. The Presbyterian Youth Fellowship hosts a Christmas banquet Friday December 14 at 6 30 pm with a candle lighting service. John Marrs and his wife serve as counselors.
Henry Rowell to head the Sportsmen's Club for 1952. Cary ever directors include Ray Cellier Ralph Riesebe and Ford Woereham. Twenty five sportsmen attended the meeting with Bruce Yeager Jr of the State Fish Commission as guest speaker on proposed game commission laws and regulations. The club outlined an activity program for the coming year to be announced later.
Two of Coos County’s oldest native pioneers observed birthdays. William F. Volkmar, born near Bread Bend in Coos County, turned 90 on November 20, having moved west with his family over 30 years ago to Washington and now residing in Langley Week. He is brother to A. L. and M. G. Volkmer, with A. L. Volkmer newly titled Coos County’s eldest living pioneer after Selden Warner’s death, at 86.
The Interchurch Fellowship at First Presbyterian Church elected Rev George Moehr as president with Milton Schroeder as vice president and Mrs Alma Lett as secretary treasurer. A Thanksgiving offering of 44 was sent to Korean relief and the group planned Xmas activities with other churches.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder says after noon mail closing time will be 4 30 instead of 4 00 until after the Christmas holidays due to heavy holiday business.
Mrs Grady Johnson of Myrtle Point and Mrs Tom Forrest of Broadbent named Red Cross chairmen by E H Card head of Coos county chapter They will lead hospital services and Junior Red Cross efforts and engage veterans hospital support in Roseburg and Medford and school children in health safety programs and international school exchanges.
Harold Clarno faced a skunk raids on his hen house after spotting the animal nearby. Neighbors watched as Clarno fired a pole shot from a safe distance and the skunk expired, its lingering odor noted by onlookers.
Rural Kiddi Lions plan a Christmas party to be staged at Hiland Theatre on Saturday December 22. Busses will transport attendees from surrounding areas to the event.

Miss Lillian Farley announces to Martha M. Purdy her plan to file for county superintendent to succeed Mrs. Purdy who will not seek another term. Farley, in her third year as county superintendent’s supervisor, formerly taught six years as principal at Bandon Elementary and holds a BS from USC and Oregon College of Education earned in 1946. Coos County school board officers for the year include John Carman president Myrtle Point high school and Allen Peterson vice president Sunny Hill with Alvin Adams Arae wo as secretary treasurer and A F Morehead Coquille Cedric Cross Riverton on the executive council. Senator Eugene Marsh McMinnville chairs the Senate committee. Continued on Page Four.
