An observer laments local stagnation and high taxes while envisioning plans for downtown development and road funding. Governor Mark Matfield says he will cooperate in every way with all concerned to achieve the best possible planning for the rapid harvest of Columbus Day blowdown timber to protect the area to the highest possible percentage. He receives a copy of the Myrtle Point chamber of commerce designation.
Myrtle Point residents urged the state highway department to allocate part of a $3 million federal Oregon highway grant to reconstruct Highway 42 between Myrtle Point and Coquille. Coos county commissioners pressed Governor Hatfield and the highway department to back accelerated public works funds for the same project. The council met Monday noting other towns moved ahead with federal funds and planning, leaving Myrtle Point behind while citing local finances and prior projects as context.
Mason is elected president of the Myrtle chamber of commerce. W B Billingsley is first vice president and Robert Paul second vice president. Mrs Inez Harris is re elected secretary after 30 years in the role. Milton Schroeder becomes treasurer. New officers take office January 7.
Youngsters queued for a free holiday show sponsored by Myrtle Point merchants. They arrived 22 days early, expecting the event on Saturday December 22 at 1 p.m. Children said they were left by parents who went shopping in Coos Bay, unsure of where to go or what to do.
The Myrtle Point Bobcats open Friday with a game against Myrtle Creek. They travel to face Reedsport on Saturday December 15 as part of the early season slate.
Three towns have followed Myrtle Point’s example by removing parking meters to ease two hour limits. Retailers urge shoppers to observe the two hour rule to ensure parking spaces for Christmas shopping paths.
The Myrtle Point chamber of commerce retail trades committee schedules a 1 p.m. December event at the Milend theatre with free candy distribution by Senta, followed by a free show at 6:90 p.m. on December 22 in the town center.
The Bureau of Land Management begins a $108,000 federal public works program in southwestern Oregon. District Manager B. T. Vladimiroff states the plan should aid economic recovery and improve timber and recreation resources. Work starts on Bear Creek recreation area with local small contractors bidding. An additional $160,000 was allocated for three projects under the Public Works Act in early November. The Bear Creek site will include a swimming hole and campsite. Salvage timber from the Oct 12 storm will be processed within 19 years ending fiscal year 1904.
Ray Whiteside resigns after five years at Elks Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club and moves to Phoenix Arizona to teach and play as pro. Jack McLarrin buys the pro shop and will run operations with John O Sullivan. Exalted Ruler George Linn outlines new management for the course and club activities. Trophies for Spring Handicap and Fall Club Championship were awarded at a Sunday dinner with Ritchie Francis toastmaster, honoring both men's and women's clubs.
