The Polat library enlarges its facilities by combining the city recorder’s room and the old fire truck bay to create two larger rooms. Begun in 1935 with support from the local Woman’s Club and donations, it now houses over 3 000 books with around 19 000 volumes anticipated as growth continues.

G G Gill of Myrtle Point leaves Missouri bound for Myrtle Point and plans to return October 12. Helen Whitaker and J E Whitaker drove to Portland for a short visit. Mrs Orn Bolinger and Patricia and Mrs A LaFlamme toured Gold Beach via Port Orford with luncheon hosted by Mrs Delbert Hacklemen at Ophir.
A large gathering from Myrtle Point Coquille Marshfield Roseburg and other cities attended a picnic in Abernethy grove Tow Ernest Krennon directed a skit of a stagecoach arrival at the Half Way House. Dinger Hermann Navy Harry and many Laird relatives were present.
Mr and Mrs Guy Gant of Gaylord rented the N G W Perkins house on Fourth Street. Mr and Mrs Rolla Spencer moved into the W Culver house on C Street. One day that week Thomas Lakey rented the P W Laird house on Cemetery Road. Macie Crumley moved into the P W Laird house on C Street one day last week.
Myrtle Point Townsend club joins Coquille and Powers clubs for a three way celebration on Sunday September 3 at Myrtle Grange hall starting at 2 p m. The event marks the founding of Townsend clubs in America with a program of speeches and a public invitation.
The RNA regular meeting scheduled for Monday evening September 4 is canceled because Monday is a holiday. State Supervisor Lenora Broil of Ashland will be in Coquille next Tuesday evening and all Myrtle Point members are invited to attend.
A Sunday incident at the Flentge Perkins residence in Myrtle Point required fire department help after a pot roast burned in a thrift cooker. Nicotine-colored grease coated interior furnishings and floors, with odors lingering outside. The Perkins family relocated to Mr. Perkins' brother's home while the Johnsons stayed away.
Baker visitors Mr and Mrs Claston Stence visited Reuben Roup on Sunday. Miss Jopty Watson of Coquillets spent the weekend with her sister Mrs Richard Gill. Mrs H R Wright of Portland spent the weekend with her brother Grover Alverson. Mrs Frances Alverson 81 from Eureka Mont arrived in Portland for an indefinite visit. Brice and Mr Bonewitz of Weston visiting sister Mrs Henry Knight. Mabel Barklow and Roderick returned from the San Francisco World Fair. John Skaugen and Ms Hansen from Seattle were guests of L McKay ahead of a trip to the fair. Mrs Chris Moller injured left ankle. leg cast for weeks. Mrs Lorin Johnson of Gazelle Calif moved from Mast hospital to Nellie Ray’s home. Grace Linn former Myrtle Point teacher visited before Ben d return to Bend for winter teaching.
The 78th Oregon State Fair opens Monday at Salem fairgrounds with large livestock entries and a new stock barn nearly a seventh of a mile long. The program features include the San Francisco Sherriff Mounted Posse, a night horse show, pari mutuel racing, Eddie Peabody and Zoe Del Santis in a revue, plus a cheese and butter exhibit and special stunts by S and M Flying Service from Portland.
Mrs Frank Freeman hosted Friday night for her sister Mrs J Gordon Sewell of Palol Alto California. Myrtle Point guests included Mesdames Walter Sykes Ernest Luthy Clifford Wilson A M Sunstrup Rex Smith and Della Nosle of Coquille. Mrs T G Sumerlin gave a farewell for Miss Grace Linn who departs to teach in Bend after 12 years at the local high school.
The Oregon State Board of Health asks parents of children starting school this fall to obtain birth registration notifications. If missing, write to the Division of Vital Statistics with the child’s name birth date and place. A birth certificate is needed for school admission work permits licenses voting marriage and identity.
Ivan Cotton of Dora shoots a 200 point black bear with a .22 rifle Sunday while wandering near his home. The youth encountered the animal and succeeded in killing it, ending a local wildlife encounter.
The Elgin Social Club announces a rummage sale to be held at the Herald building on September 7 and 8. Members invite contributions to be dropped off at Mr. or Mrs. Ellis’s home.
Marriage licenses issued and nuptials performed across Coquille Marshfield North Bend Reedsport and surrounding areas. Couples include John R Ryan and Klyta M Lyons Marshfield pair Genie Elizabeth Boyd and Wm Leutsch of Marshfield and others with clerical ceremonies by Rev C Adrian Sias Rev Joel Benton Rev J D Habbick and Rev Virgil M Wroe at local homes and churches.
In County Jail John D Woolls 42 of Powers serves a 90 day sentence for continual intoxication. Cecil Arneson 82 arrested Aug 21 for transporting mutton with improper tags now faces DWI and serves 30 days. Leland Smith 16 arrested on assault with a dangerous weapon.
The Granger and Farmer picnic will be held this Sunday in the Norway grove. Attendees are asked to bring a basket lunch to be served cafeteria style in the afternoon. Coffee, cream and sugar will be furnished. The afternoon includes games swimming and various contests.
Placer miners along Jonnaon creek report water shortages caused by extreme drought. Streams in the region are noticeably lower this year than in recent years, hindering mining operations and raising concerns among crews.
Saturday Dance plans a surprise program popular across San Francisco and northern cities. Don the tenor axman and Séery Larson, confined to hospital for two weeks, will return this Saturday to complete the event.
The Gravelford Grange plans a dance at the Gravelford community building this Saturday. The committee promises good music and a lively program.
Saturday gathering of pre school teachers from rural districts convened in the Coquille circuit court room. President Mrs. Lillian Hines opened with a welcome, followed by a panel discussion on Rural Teacher Experience and talks on the New Register and health department functions.

Della L and John Belloni to James D Clinton Lots 19 to 3 in Smith's First Addition to Bandon. With schools starting, the community is urged to donate clothes and shoes for those in need. Local schools organize collection efforts and request participation from residents to support families this season.
Clara Ellen Heller aged 42 died at her McKinley home Sunday night August 27 1988 after a 12 year illness. Born November 19 1896 in McKinley she spent most of her life in the Cherry Creek area and taught in county schools before retirement. Her father Charles Heller was the first pioneer to settle in Cherry Creek near McKinney.
